Santa Monica Beach, located in the city of Santa Monica, is a highly popular 3.5-mile-long beach with light brown sand. Santa Monica Pier, stretching 1,650 feet, is a well-known landmark and draws millions of visitors annually. It is an iconic pier that was initially opened in 1909 and has been designated as a Santa Monica Historic Landmark - this pier offers a large variety of things to do including a popular amusement park named Pacific Park that has the world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel, fun rides for kids (including a 1920s carousel), an arcade, an aquarium at the end of the pier named Heal The Bay Aquarium, and interesting concessions and shops. Santa Monica Beach is also frequented by snorkelers and scuba divers, and visitors may spot wildlife such as seals, sea lions, and migrating whales at certain times of the year. If you’re into biking or skating, the Ocean Front Walk (also called the Santa Monica Boardwalk) offers a scenic path with oceanfront views and passes by various restaurants and shops. Located a few miles west of Santa Cruz, Four Mile Beach is named for its distance from the city of Santa Cruz. The beach is one of the most popular beaches in The Wilder Ranch State Park area. Although it is traditionally frequented by professional surfers, it is also a favorite weekend spot for non-surfing beachgoers. The beach is situated between bluffs present on the southern end of the state park and has beige-colored sand. The area around the beach is full of grassy vegetation and has a couple of ponds, along with Baldwin Creek which meets the ocean at the beach location. While the beach does not have any lifeguards, showers, or concession stands and does not allow dogs, it does have restrooms.
Located on the southern part of the town of Pacifica, Pacifica State Beach is a state park area situated in a large cove along the San Mateo County shoreline. There is a large beach in this state park which is three-quarters of a mile long and has light brown sand. Pacifica State Beach is also known as Linda Mar Beach and Taco Bell Beach (due to a Taco Bell Restaurant present nearby). The northern part of Pacifica State Beach has large sand dunes while the southern part is narrower and rockier. The San Pedro Creek meets the ocean on the southern part of the beach. Pacifica State Beach is open from 5:00 am to 10:30 pm during Daylight Savings Time (usually between second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November) and from 5:00 am to 7:00 pm during fall and winter.
Located near downtown Half Moon Bay, Redondo Beach - also known as Wavecrest Beach - is situated in the central portion of Half Moon Bay waterfront. The beach is long and has light brown sand, and there is a rocky reef along its shoreline that is situated below steep and partially eroded bluffs. Redondo Beach does not have lifeguards or other amenities except some walking trails, so plan your trip accordingly. Redondo Beach allows dogs on leash. Getting to Redondo Beach is easy - it's located near the intersection of Redondo Beach Road and Thorne Avenue. There is a marked free parking lot on the blufftop area above the beach. There are many access routes down the beach from the blufftop, all of which are steep and hard to traverse. We recommend using a route present north of the parking lot which is safer and less steep, from where you can access Redondo Beach after going down the bluff-side. This beach, located near the Redondo Beach Pier, is a beloved spot for locals and visitors in the South Bay area, stretching along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway and connecting to neighboring Hermosa Beach and Riviera Village in Los Angeles County.
Located only a 10-minute drive south of downtown Laguna Beach, Victoria Beach is one of the city’s most famous beaches because of its Victorian-style Pirate Tower. This medieval-looking tower is a short but rocky hike from the beach access point.
Located on the south side of the city of Crescent City, Enderts Beach is a remote and rocky beach situated at the point where Nickel Creek meets the North Pacific Ocean. Enderts Beach is a well-known tide pooling destination and a part of the Redwood National Park.

Located in the community of La Jolla, La Jolla Strand Beach is a narrow rock-and-sand beach with some interesting rock formations, similar to other San Diego beaches. This beach is situated below steep oceanfront bluffs and offers a mix of sandy beaches and rocky areas. The rocky portions of this beach are composed of sandstone, much like those found in sea caves along the coastline. It is important to note that this beach can be rockier during the winter season as winter storms can often blow away the sand. While La Jolla Shores Beach and Torrey Pines State Beach are more popular, La Jolla Strand Beach provides a quieter alternative with its unique landscape.
Located near the border between Ventura County and Santa Barbara County, Rincon County Park Beach is a beach with light brown sand. The beach is situated near a gated residential area to the north of Rincon Point and below a blufftop park called the Rincon County Park (also known as Rincon Beach Park). The southern parts of the beach are pebbly and rocky. The Rincon Creek meets the ocean near the southern end of the beach.
Located in the east of the city of Malibu, Carbon Beach - East Access is one of the three access points at Carbon Beach. Carbon Beach is a one-and-a-half-mile-long south-facing beach that is situated between the Malibu Pier on Surfrider Beach and Carbon Canyon Road. Carbon Beach has been nicknamed Billionaires’ Beach due to the many ultra-wealthy homeowners and 70+ incredibly expensive homes owned by celebrities and CEOs there – in 2019, one home sold for $110 million. Carbon Beach - East Access has smooth light brown sand that is great for beach walking, and swimming and paddle boarding are also popular here. Carbon Beach - East Access used to be known as the David Geffen Access – the entertainment mogul David Geffen fought for years to avoid putting a public access point here, and after a 25-year battle, he sold his property in 2007 when the State of California forced him to open one.
Located below oceanfront bluffs in Malibu, Point Dume State Beach – also called Point Dume Beach, Big Dume Beach, and Dume Cove Beach – is a crescent-shaped, extremely popular state-managed beach with light brown sand. Lonely Planet magazine listed it as one of the best beaches in Malibu, and Conde Nast Traveller magazine also listed it as one of the best beaches in Los Angeles. Located in Mendocino Headlands State Park, Portuguese Beach is a beach with light brown sand. This beach is situated below oceanfront bluffs.
Located in the city of Mill Valley between Point Bonita to the south and Tennessee Point to the north, Rodeo Beach is characterized by a 50-meter-wide sand spit that separates Rodeo Lagoon from Rodeo Cove. It is situated on the west side of the Marin Headlands peninsula in Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Rodeo Beach is a wide, sheltered, and secluded beach as it is surrounded by cliffs and two military forts that once guarded the shores. Rodeo Beach is composed of many small brown-, red-, green-, and blue-colored pebbles.
Located in the town of Jenner, Goat Rock Beach is a long and wide beach situated northwest of the Russian River Bridge in Sonoma Coast State Park. Goat Rock Beach is a popular destination for beachcombing and there are many sea stacks and a large rock arch offshore. Goat Rock Beach offers a couple of amenities including restrooms, picnic tables, barbecues, and driftwoods. There are many fun activities at Goat Rock Beach including beachcombing, bird watching, wildlife watching, kayaking, and beach walking – but swimming here can be very dangerous because of large waves. Please note that fishing is prohibited here and you must stay at least 50 yards away from the shore if the local colony of seals is present. Getting to Goat Rock Beach is easy – after you get off of Coast Highway, drive down to the northern end of Goat Rock Road to reach a parking lot that is within walking distance of the beach.
Located in the city of Monterey, Zmudowski State Beach is a one and a half mile long, wide, and remote beach that is backed by tall dunes and wetlands. Zmudowski State Beach is a part of a state park with the same name and is at the northern end of the small town of Moss Landing. Zmudowski State Beach is situated on the south side of the mouth of the Pajaro River making it an incredible spot for surfcasting and birdwatching.
El Matador Beach, located in Los Angeles County, is one of three beaches that make up the Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach (the other two are El Pescador Beach and La Piedra Beach). Nestled along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway, El Matador Beach, or “El Mat,” is known for its picturesque rock formations, golden sands, and is located below dramatic oceanfront bluffs that are lined with very expensive multimillion-dollar homes that, in some cases, exceed $30 million.
The beach has been named as the 11th best beach in “Top 50 Beaches of the United States” list in 2022 by Randall Kaplan, the world’s foremost beach expert who is known as “Mr. Beach.” Managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, El Matador Beach is also celebrated by Lonely Planet as one of the top beaches in the U.S., and it’s often recognized as one of Los Angeles’s best beaches. Visitors can enjoy the beach daily from 8 am until sunset.
Located in the town of El Granada, Ross Cove Beach is one mile in length and is a part of the James V. Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in the city of Half Moon Bay. Ross Cove Beach is situated on the north side of a well-known fishing and boating spot named Pillar Point below the Pillar Point Bluff Park that features many trails. Also known as Ross Cove, Ross Cove Beach offers restrooms and many fun activities including surfing, hiking, whale watching, and beachcombing. Getting to Ross Cove Beach requires a little bit of work – after you get off of Highway 1, drive down to 300 West Point Avenue to reach the paid Pillar Point Marsh parking lot. There is a bluff west of the parking area and you can climb down the bluff using any of these two trails – one is in front of the Air Force Military Facility’s gate and the other is on the west side of a gated radio tower.
Located in the city of Malibu, Puerco Beach is a narrow beach situated below Pacific Coast Highway between Puerco Creek and Corral Creek Bridge. It is rarely crowded and a south-facing beach that is mostly wet during high tides and is in front of many private homes and condos. Since all California beaches are public below the mean high tide line, Puerco Beach is a public beach. Dan Blocker Beach and Amarillo Beach are situated at the western and eastern end of the beach respectively. When the waves are small, this beach can be an excellent site for boating, fishing, hiking, paddle-boarding, scuba diving beneath kelp forests and on the reefs, snorkeling, and swimming.
Located near the southern end of the town of Caspar, Caspar Headlands State Beach - also known as Caspar Creek Beach - is a beach with light brown sand and sparse vegetation. The beach is situated in a deep cove called Caspar Anchorage and is designated as a state park. While the water near the beach is cold, it has milder currents than other beaches in Mendocino County. Caspar Creek and Doyle Creek meet the ocean near the northern and southern ends of the beach respectively.
Located along the County of Los Angeles shoreline, Manhattan Beach – also known as Manhattan County Beach – is a two-mile-long and wide beach with light brown sand, a pier named the Manhattan Beach Pier, nearby shrubs and palm trees, and a nearby reef. This beach is located within a city that is also called Manhattan Beach. This beach is also part of a region within the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area that is called South Bay.

Located in the center of the City of Pismo Beach, the northern end of Pismo State Beach gives way to a bustling beach area centered around the iconic Pismo Beach Pier. The southern areas of the beach provide access to the North Beach Campground area where Pismo Creek forms a lagoon while in the north of the beach are volleyball courts, several rock formations, and another beach area (which is also accessible via Wilmar Stairs). The beach is the starting point of a massive stretch of a continuous sandy area that spans several miles and ends in the City of Guadalupe, California.
Located on the site of the old China House in Newport Beach, China Cove Beach is a small, tucked away sandy beach surrounded by houses and the William G. Kerckhoff Marine Laboratory. China Cove is often uncrowded and a great beach for those looking to relax and escape the large crowds. The entrance to the beach can be found at the intersection of Fernleaf Avenue and Ocean Boulevard in the neighborhood of Corona Del Mar. Once you arrive, you can find ample street parking along Ocean Boulevard.
Located near the mouth of the Gualala River, Gualala River Beach is a riverfront pebbly beach. This beach is situated along the banks of the Gualala River and is a part of a historic area known as the Mill Bend, which was recently acquired by the Redwood Coast Land Conservancy. This beach is surrounded by dense vegetation and the Gualala River Bridge is also present nearby. This beach is a part of a region locally known as the "Banana Belt" which has sunnier and warmer weather than other parts of Mendocino County. Gualala River Beach does not have lifeguards. However, the beach has a small craft boat launch and some trails. The beach also allows dogs. Getting to Gualala River Beach is easy - the access trail to the beach is situated just north of the Gualala River Bridge along the western side of Coast Highway / Pacific Coast Highway. There is a free parking lot near the beginning of the access trail just across the highway. Since you need to cross an active highway from the parking lot to access the beach, we recommend being very careful.
Located in the Westside region of Los Angeles County, Will Rogers State Beach - sometimes also known as Will Rogers Beach - is a large and three miles long beach with light brown sand, a few rocky breakwaters, and a few rocks. The approximate area of this beach is around 103 acres. This beach is located in the neighborhood of Pacific Palisades - it is important to note that despite this beach’s name, Will Rogers State Beach is actually managed by the County of Los Angeles. The southern portion of this beach is wide and sandy and the central portion of this beach has a series of short rocky breakwaters. The northern portion of this beach is significantly narrow and this portion is also rockier than other parts of Will Rogers State Beach. The northernmost portion of this beach is named Sunset Point Beach and it is also known as Sunset Beach. In addition, there is also another portion of Will Rogers State Beach that is known as Ginger Rogers Beach - this beach is located near the southernmost portion of Will Rogers State Beach. Ginger Rogers Beach is located just south of the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Entrada Drive - this beach is popular with the local LGBTQ+ community. Will Rogers State Beach is named after famous Hollywood actor and cowboy Will Rogers - Will Rogers initially owned a portion of this beach area and he also owned an estate nearby. After Rogers’ death in a plane crash in 1935, his wife Betty inherited his estate and properties. Betty in turn donated Rogers’ coastal land to the State of California. Will Rogers State Beach was dedicated to the public by the State of California in 1942. In 1975, the County of Los Angeles took over the management of this beach from the State of California. There is a rock on Will Rogers State Beach that has a bronze plaque commemorating Will Rogers. Will Rogers State Beach should not be confused with another separate state park named Will Rogers State Historic Park- this state park is located near Will Rogers State Beach. As an interesting fact, many movies and television shows have been shot on Will Rogers State Beach including the popular television show Baywatch, the 1954 movie Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the 1950Humphrey Bogartmovie In a Lonely Place. A creek named Rustic Creek flows in the southern portion of Will Rogers State Beach - once this creek passes the beach, it flows into the Pacific Ocean. Will Rogers State Beach has lifeguards - the lifeguards here are deployed from sunrise to sunset. In addition to lifeguards, Will Rogers State Beach also has many other amenities including picnic tables, a children’s playground, concession stands, restrooms, a walking path, showers, volleyball courts, and a biking path. Dogs are not allowed in Will Rogers State Beach. Beach wheelchairs for visitors with disabilities are available at Will Rogers State Beach on a first-come-first-serve basis. Located in the city of Venice in Southern California, Venice Beach – also known as Venice City Beach - is an extremely popular three-mile long beach that has light brown sand and rocky breakwaters. This beach is very large – approximately 238 acres in size. The southern portion of Venice Beach is known as Venice Pier Beach- this portion received this name because it has a 1,300-feet long pier named the Venice Pier that is also known as Venice Fishing Pier. Venice Beach has been named the 3rd Best Beach in the Top 50 Beaches in the United States list in 2022 by Randall Kaplan, the world's foremost beach expert who is known as "Mr. Beach.” (Please note that Venice Beach in California should not be confused with another popular beach in the United States named Venice Public Beach, which is also known as Venice Beach) that is located in Sarasota County in Florida.)

This beach is around four miles long and stretches all the way from the mouth of Alder Creek to the area near the Garcia River Estuary. Brush Creek and Alder Creek flow through this beach into the Pacific Ocean. The beach shoreline is slightly curved, which results in the beach having a lot of debris that is frequently deposited by the ocean.

Located midway between the town of Mendocino and the city of Fort Bragg, Jug Handle State Natural Reserve is a state park with an unnamed flat white sand beach - which is also sometimes known as Jug Handle Creek Beach - in Mendocino County. The beach is surrounded by oceanfront bluffs on both sides and the Jug Handle Creek meets the ocean near the northern part of the beach. There is a gulch present near the eastern part of the beach above which there is an arched bridge.

The beach is situated below oceanfront bluffs and is part of MacKerricher State Park, known for its rocky shoreline and numerous metal beach-poles. The water near MacKerricher State Park - Main Beach is cold with strong currents. While the beach itself lacks lifeguards or amenities, the surrounding state park offers restrooms, picnic tables, and extensive hiking and biking trails. Dogs are welcome on leash. Access to MacKerricher State Park - Main Beach is convenient, located near 24100 MacKerricher State Park Road, easily reached from Shoreline Highway / Pacific Coast Highway via Mill Creek Drive. Getting to Big River beach is easy - multiple free parking lots for the beach are located along Big River Road near its intersection with Shoreline Highway / Pacific Coast Highway. There is an access trail near these parking lots which will lead you to Big River Beach. As another access option, you can drive to the Mendocino Presbyterian Church which is located at 44831 Main Street. You can park at a free parking lot situated behind the church. From this parking lot you need to walk on an access trail that leads down along the bluffside to a wooden stairway offering access to Big River Beach. We recommend visiting the beach wearing appropriate footwear as this beach is known to have driftwood.
Crescent Beach, Avalon's main beach, is divided into three parts: South, Middle, and Step Beach. All three beaches are perfect for families, as they are lifeguard-protected and in close proximity to shops, restaurants, water sports companies, and boat rental companies. Make sure to claim a spot early, however, because the dry spots on the beach are quite limited. Everybody loves a good beach day, and everybody loves all that Crescent Beach has to offer.
Located to the north of the town of Klamath, Wilson Creek Beach - also known as Wilson Beach - is a wide beach with dark gray sand and some rocky parts. This beach is situated at the northern end of a cove called the False Klamath Cove and is a part of a state park known as Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park. The Wilson Creek also flows through the beach into the Pacific Ocean. There is a historic ranch house behind this beach which was originally owned by the DeMartin Family.
Located to the north of Trinidad, College Cove - also known as College Cove Beach - is a secluded beach with brown sand and interesting rock formations. This beach is situated below forested oceanfront bluffs and is the northern part of a larger state-protected beach named Trinidad State Beach. A large offshore rock formation named the Pewetole Island is present near this beach. In addition, there is a rocky archway near this beach named "The Portal" which separates College Cove Beach from the main portion of Trinidad State Beach. During rainy weather, a waterfall named "College Cove Falls" can also be seen near this beach. As an interesting fact, portions of the 2001 Jim Carrey film The Majestic were shot on this beach. College Cove does not have lifeguards. However, the area around this beach has picnic tables and restrooms. Dogs on leash are allowed on the beach.

Ross Creek flows through the northern end of the beach into the Pacific Ocean. Bowling Ball Beach does not have lifeguards or any other amenities except restrooms, so plan your trip accordingly. Located near the Bahia Resort Hotel, Bahia Point Park is a grassy park that has an unnamed beach with light brown sand and a curved shape. This beach is also known as Bahia Point Park Beach and Bahia Point Beach. Bahia Point Park is situated in the Bahia Point peninsula along the Mission Bay shoreline and is a part of a larger municipal aquatic park known as Mission Bay Park. Bahia Point Park does not have lifeguards. However, the park has many other amenities including restrooms, picnic tables, and fire-pits. Dogs on leash are allowed in the park before 9 am and after 6 pm between April and October. Between November and March dogs are allowed before 9 am and after 4 pm. Getting to Bahia Point Park is easy - the park is located near 998 West Mission Bay Drive, where a free parking lot is also available. You can easily walk to the beach from this parking lot.
