Overview

Located near the southern end of the town of Caspar, Caspar Headlands State Beach - also known as Caspar Creek Beach - is a beach with light brown sand and sparse vegetation. The beach is situated in a deep cove called Caspar Anchorage and is designated as a state park. While the water near the beach is cold, it has milder currents than other beaches in Mendocino County. Caspar Creek and Doyle Creek meet the ocean near the northern and southern ends of the beach respectively. 

Amenities

Caspar Headlands State Beach does not have lifeguards or any other amenities except walking trails. However, there is a campground near the beach that has restrooms and a camp store. Caspar Headlands State Beach allows dogs on leash. 

Activities

Caspar Headlands State Beach offers many fun activities including beachcombing, fishing, sunbathing, swimming, wildlife watching, surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, bodysurfing, boogie boarding, kayaking, canoeing, snorkeling, scuba diving, boating, jet-skiing, hiking, and camping. The water near Caspar Headlands State Beach is safer and more suitable for recreational aquatic activities as compared to other Mendocino County beaches. However, we still recommend being careful while going in the water near Caspar Headlands State Beach as it is really cold and water conditions can change unpredictably near the beach. The water near the beach is home to many animals including seals, sea lions, migrating grey whales (between December and April). If you like birdwatching, you can find many shorebirds and ospreys near the beach. Another popular activity in Caspar Headlands State Beach is fishing - depending on the time of the year, you can catch a large array of fish in the water near the beach including salmon and steelhead.    

If you like hiking, there are hiking trails near the northern part of the beach, which offers Instagram-worthy views of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged Mendocino County shoreline. Towards the south of Caspar, Headlands State Beach is another state park called Caspar Headlands State Natural Reserve that has hiking trails via which you can explore the marvelous blufftop area around the town of Caspar. This state park also offers incredible views of Caspar Headlands State Beach and the surrounding coastline. If you like camping, Caspar Beach RV Park and Camp Ground is situated adjacent to the beach and accommodates RVs and tents. In addition, the campground also offers accommodation in cabins. This campground offers many amenities including a cleaning station and water and electricity hook-ups for RVs, wifi, showers, a convenience store, an internet cafe, and a game room.

Getting to Caspar Headlands State Beach is easy - it is located near 14441 Point Cabrillo Drive, which is easily accessible from Pacific Coast Highway/California State Highway 1. There is a free parking lot near the beach.  

Attractions

There are many attractions near Caspar Headlands State Beach. The Temple of Kwan Tai is a Chinese Taoist temple and a California Historical Landmark that was built in the 19th century and offers an interesting insight into the role played by the Asian community in California’s development and history. Little River Museum offers interesting exhibits on the rich and unique natural history and cultural history of Mendocino County. If you are looking for another attraction near Caspar Headlands State Beach, Triangle Tattoo & Museum has interesting tattoo-related artifacts and exhibits. The museum is run by renowned local tattoo artists Madame Chinchilla and Mr. G.

Restaurants

If you get hungry, there are many restaurants near Caspar Headlands State Beach. The upscale MacCallum House Restaurant has a rosy ambiance and serves fantastic gourmet dishes. Trillium Cafe offers a memorable oceanfront dining area and also has a fireplace. In addition, the restaurant also serves amazing Californian cuisine with Mediterranean and East Asian influences. If you are looking for another good and affordable restaurant near Caspar Headlands State Beach, the modestly priced Garden Bakery of Mendocino offers a variety of delicious pastries, burritos, pies, savory pockets, and sweet empanadas.

If you are looking for a hotel near Caspar Headlands State Beach, there are many great nearby options. The 4-Star North Cliff Hotel offers mesmerizing views of the northern California coastline and also serves complimentary breakfast. A more affordable hotel is the 3-Star Agate Cove Innthat offers many amenities including complimentary breakfast, complimentary hot drinks, a lounge, a garden with sitting areas, hammocks, swings, and sun loungers, and a hot tub. If you are looking for another good and affordable hotel near Caspar Headlands State Beach, the modestly priced 2-Star Surf Motel & Gardens offers many amenities including an outdoor shower, facilities for parking and charging RVs, complimentary breakfast, a bike cleaning station, a fenced-in pet exercise area, gardens having a gazebo that views of the ocean, picnic tables, and barbecue spots. In addition, the hotel also organizes a shuttle service for many nearby local attractions and restaurants.
