China Beach is a picturesque cove nestled between Lands End and Baker Beach in San Francisco's Sea Cliff neighborhood. It offers a tranquil escape from the city, with a sheltered sandy area perfect for picnics and sunbathing. The beach is renowned for its stunning views of the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate Bridge. Historically, it was a campsite for Chinese fishermen, and a monument commemorates their presence. The beach is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is managed by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.
The area is rich in history, having been once inhabited by the Ohlone people and later named after San Francisco's 25th mayor, James D. Phelan. However, it was renamed China Beach in recognition of its historical significance to Chinese immigrants.
Currently, China Beach is undergoing construction to improve its infrastructure, ensuring continued access and enjoyment for visitors.
