Located only an 8-minute drive north of downtown La Jolla, La Jolla Shores beach is popular with families and active beachgoers because of its endless activities and many amenities including lifeguards, restrooms, and showers.

The long stretch of sand is over one-mile long and is perfect for walking and running. La Jolla Shores Beach has also sand volleyball courts and a basketball court. The La Jolla Shores Boardwalk is a great path for biking and skateboarding up the San Diego coast. You’ll find many surf schools near the beach that offer camps and private lessons for beginners – we recommend Surf Diva and La Jolla Surf Systems. Another popular activity in La Jolla Shores is the guided kayak tour to see the La Jolla Caves. The La Jolla Kayak Tour starts at $39 per person and offers a tour of all seven La Jolla Rock Caves where you can explore the La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve. Scuba diving and snorkeling are also extremely popular because of the abundance of marine life including leopard sharks and sea lions.

You’ll find multiple large free parking lots located near the beach but these can fill up quickly so be sure to plan ahead. You can also find free street parking in nearby residential neighborhoods.

If you get hungry, you’ll find many restaurants just a 5-minute walk from the beach in the heart of La Jolla Shores. We like Caroline’s Seaside Café, a popular brunch spot that’s located on the north end of La Jolla Shores Beach and serves healthy and creative California cuisine. The La Jolla Shores Hotel is home to restaurants including The Shore’s Restaurant, a family-friendly seafood establishment with outdoor seating and ocean views. If you’re looking for fine dining, check out Piatti, a traditional Italian trattoria that’s only a 4-minute drive from the beach and offers patio seating set under string lights and a large fig tree.

If you’re looking for a place to stay, check out the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, an upscale oceanfront hotel that has been a popular family-friendly resort destination for more than 80 years. It offers many amenities including 12 championship tennis courts, on-site restaurants, and a spa. We also recommend La Jolla Shores Hotel, a laid-back resort that’s popular with families, couples, and business travelers. You can take less than a 5-minute drive from La Jolla Shores Beach to find Hotel La Jolla Curio Collection by Hilton, a luxury hotel that offers free bike rentals, ocean-view balconies, and an outdoor poolside bar.
