Overview

Located near the historic Belmont Park amusement park, Bonita Cove Park is a grassy recreational park that has an unnamed beach with light brown sand. This large beach is also known as Bonita Cove Park Beach. Bonita Cove Park is situated within Bonita Cove and is a part of a larger municipal aquatic park named Mission Bay Park. Mexican fan palm trees are also present near the beach. Bonita Cove Park has lifeguards from the beginning of the local academic spring break to the month of October. It is important to note that lifeguard deployment around the beach is generally on weekends except during summers, when lifeguards are deployed around the beach daily. Bonita Cove Park also has many other amenities including restrooms, picnic tables, barbecues, showers, a children’s playground, volleyball courts, fire pits, and a biking path. Dogs on leash are allowed in the park before 9 am and after 6 pm between April and October. Between November and March dogs are allowed before 9 am and after 4 pm.

Activities

Bonita Cove Park offers many fun activities including beachcombing, sunbathing, biking, wildlife watching, picnicking, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, surf-skiing, boating, paddleboarding, stand-up paddleboarding, volleyball, fishing, and jet-skiing. The generally calm water near this beach is ideal for beginner swimmers, kayakers, canoers, and paddleboarders. If you like birdwatching, you can view many interesting varieties of shorebirds around Bonita Cove Park depending on the time of the year. If you are planning to fish in the water near Bonita Cove Park, please make sure that you follow the local fishing regulations. The park is popular among families as it has a half-acre large children’s playground named the Maruta Gardner Playground in honor of a renowned local activist. Fire pits present around the beach in Bonita Cove Park also offer an amazing waterfront bonfire session. However, if you are planning to organise a bonfire in Bonita Cove Park, you can visit the city of San Diego’s official website to obtain more information about the bonfire regulations in Mission Bay Park. 

Parking

Getting to Bonita Cove Park is easy - the park is located near 3290 Mariners Way, where multiple free parking lots are also available. However, we recommend visiting Bonita Cove Park early as the parking lots near this park fill up quickly during summer.

Attractions

There are many attractions near Bonita Cove Park. Mission Bay Golf Course and Practice Center has an 18-hole golf course that offers a challenging session of golf. Point Loma Native Plant Garden features a variety of rare and endangered plants which are found along the San Diego River. If you are looking for another attraction near Bonita Cove Park, Belmont Park is an amusement park offering a number of exciting rides, a gaming arcade and a restaurant. This park also has the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, which was built in 1925 and is a part of the United States’ National Register of Historic Places.

Oceana Coastal Kitchen is an upscale restaurant which offers a pleasant oceanfront dining experience. In addition, the restaurant also offers excellent dishes prepared from locally-sourced seafood. The Mission Restaurant offers amazing breakfast and lunch dishes including eggs, French toasts, pancakes, and tamales. In addition, the restaurant has also been praised by many publications including the San Diego Magazine and the Ranch & Coast Magazine. If you are looking for another good and affordable restaurant near Bonita Cove Park, The Menu Restaurant offers amazing breakfast dishes in generous portions including pancakes, eggs, waffles, and French toast. In addition, the restaurant also serves excellent Mexican dishes including burritos, quesadillas, and huevos rancheros.

If you are looking for a hotel near Bonita Cove Park, there are many great nearby options. The 4-Star Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa offers many amenities including a lounge, gym, a pool, water-sporting equipment rental facility, a private beach-club, a spa, and a tropical bird room. In addition, the hotel also has two restaurants (including one with outdoor dining areas and firepits). The hotel also organizes boat cruises for a fee. A more affordable hotel is the 3-Star Bahia Resort Hotel which offers many amenities including a pool, a hot tub, a children’s game room, multiple tennis courts, a Moroccan-themed bar, and a cafe. In addition, the restaurant also offers exciting complimentary cruises in a vintage riverboat. If you are looking for another good and affordable hotel near Bonita Cove Park, the modestly priced 2-Star Old Town Inn offers many amenities including a pool, a barbecue grill, a gaming arcade, laundry facilities, and complimentary breakfast.
