Overview

Located in the Shelter Island neighborhood of Point Loma, Shelter Island Shoreline Park is a mile-long grassy park with a small, unnamed, brown sand beach. 

Amenities

While the beach in Shelter Island Shoreline Park does not have lifeguards, there are many other amenities on and around the beach including restrooms, a fishing pier, picnic tables, walking and biking paths, a boat launch, a children‚Äôs play area, firepits, and a gazebo. Dogs on leash are allowed on the beach before 9 am and after 6 pm between April and October. Between November and March dogs on leash are allowed here before 9 am and after 4 pm. 

Activities

The beach in Shelter Island Shoreline Park offers many fun activities including swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing, boating, and fishing. The generally calm waters near the beach in Shoreline Park Shelter Island make it ideal for beginner swimmers, kayakers, paddleboarders, and canoers. However, if you are planning to go into the water near Shelter Island Shoreline Park, please ensure that you review the water quality first as the water here is often known to have high levels of microbial contamination and pollutants. Benches and picnic tables are present around this beach and offer fantastic Instagram-worthy views of the San Diego Bay. Fire pits are also present around this beach which can be used for a relaxing bonfire session. In addition, a fishing pier known as the Shelter Island Fishing Pier is also present near this beach - depending on the time of the year, you can catch many kinds of fish in the water near this pier including bass, halibut, mackerel, and barracuda. The Yokohama Friendship Bell is present to the south of Shelter Island Shoreline Park and was gifted by the citizens of Yokohama (in Japan) to the citizens of its "sister city" San Diego in 1958. This large bronze bell also was gifted to commemorate the completion of 100 years of formal diplomatic relations between Japan and the United States.

Getting to the beach in Shelter Island Shoreline Park is easy - it is situated near 2210 Shelter Island Drive and a free parking lot is also present nearby. This beach and the surrounding park are open from 6 am to 10:30 pm.

Attractions

There are many attractions near Shelter Island Shoreline Park. USS Midway Museum is set in an aircraft carrier that participated in World War Two and was one of the longest-serving United States Navy aircraft carriers of the 20th century. This immensely popular museum features interesting historical exhibits, along with an aircraft gallery, a cafeteria, and a gift shop. Point Loma Native Plant Garden features an interesting collection of endangered plants that are found along the San Diego River. If you are looking for another attraction near Shelter Island Shoreline Park, the Gaslamp Quarter Historic District of San Diego has many interesting buildings dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This district also has many interesting shopping stores, nightclubs, theaters, art galleries, and restaurants.
