If you love birdwatching, you can watch many kinds of birds in the water near the San Diego River Mouth (near the northern end of the beach) especially between November and April including gulls, terns, and pelicans. You can also catch many kinds of fish in the water near this beach. In addition, the beach and the area around it are used by grunion fish for breeding usually between February and September. These fish temporarily come ashore for a couple of hours (usually after a high tide) for up to four days after a full or new moon. During this time, you can catch these grunions with your bare hands. However, if you are planning to catch grunions or any other kinds of fish in the water near this beach, we recommend that you ensure compliance with the local fishing regulations. The water along the beach shoreline is shallow, which makes it easier and safer for pets to have fun in the water. However, if you are planning to take your pet to this beach, keep in mind that pet owners are solely responsible for controlling their pets and cleaning up after them. If you are looking for a place to clean your dogs after a fun day on this beach, there is also a self-service dog wash named Dog Beach Dog Wash near the beach. If you like biking, the Ocean Beach Bike Path offers a fun and exciting biking session.
