Located in the Ocean Beach neighborhood of San Diego, Ocean Beach Dog Beach
is a wide beach with light brown sand. This extremely popular beach is situated between a biking path named the Ocean Beach Bike Path and the mouth of the San Diego River. Rocky Jetties are also present near the beach that separate the San Diego River from the entrance of the nearby Mission Bay. It is important to note that Ocean Beach Dog Beach is the northern part of a larger beach named Ocean Beach City Beach. While Ocean Beach Dog Beach has a lifeguard tower, please keep in mind that a lifeguard may not always be available on duty.
Amenities
The beach and the area around it also have many other amenities including biking paths, volleyball courts, and restrooms. Dogs are allowed without a leash in Ocean Beach Dog Beach. As an interesting fact, this beach was established as a dog-friendly area in 1972 and is one of the first beaches in the United States to legally allow dogs without a leash. In addition, dogs are allowed on the beach during any time of the day.
Activities
Ocean Beach Dog Beach offers many interesting activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, swimming, surfing, bodysurfing, bodyboarding, biking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, paddleboarding, boating, wildlife watching, and jet skiing. If you are planning to go into the water near Ocean Beach Dog Beach, we recommend being careful as the water here is known to have rip currents. Depending on the time of the year, you can view many kinds of animals in the water near this beach including seals, sea lions, and migrating grey whales. If you love birdwatching, you can watch many kinds of birds in the water near the San Diego River Mouth (near the northern end of the beach) especially between November and April including gulls, terns, and pelicans. You can also catch many kinds of fish in the water near this beach. In addition, the beach and the area around it are used by grunion fish for breeding usually between February and September. These fish temporarily come ashore for a couple of hours (usually after a high tide) for up to four days after a full or new moon. During this time, you can catch these grunions with your bare hands. However, if you are planning to catch grunions or any other kinds of fish in the water near this beach, we recommend that you ensure compliance with the local fishing regulations. The water along the beach shoreline is shallow, which makes it easier and safer for pets to have fun in the water. However, if you are planning to take your pet to this beach, keep in mind that pet owners are solely responsible for controlling their pets and cleaning up after them. If you are looking for a place to clean your dogs after a fun day on this beach, there is also a self-service dog wash named Dog Beach Dog Wash near the beach. If you like biking, the Ocean Beach Bike Path offers a fun and exciting biking session.
Parking
Getting to Ocean Beach Dog Beach is easy - the beach is located near the intersection of Voltaire Street and West Point Loma Boulevard, which is easily accessible from Interstate Highway 8. A large free parking lot is also available near this beach. However, we recommend visiting this beach early as the parking lot for this popular beach usually fills up quickly.

There are many attractions near Ocean Beach Dog Beach. SeaWorld San Diego is a theme park and aquarium that has a variety of thrilling and exciting rides. This park also offers interesting exhibits featuring a variety of unique marine animals including dolphins, sharks, otters, and orcas. This park also offers excellent animal shows and presentations. Mission Bay Park is a huge aquatic park spread over 4,000 acres and is set in the inland part of Mission Bay. The park features many amenities including picnic spots, grassy playgrounds, water play areas, water-sporting equipment and watercraft rental shops, and volleyball and softball courts. This park offers many fun activities including fishing, swimming, picnicking, and boating. If you are looking for another attraction near Ocean Beach Dog Beach, Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is an important historical landmark that has many renovated buildings dating back to the Mexican and early American period of California. This popular state park also has many interesting museums that offer a unique insight into the rich history of southern California.
