Overview
Flat Rock Beach is located in the central part of the Torrey Pines State Beach coastline, Flat Rock Beach at Torrey Pines is a beach with brown sand and many small pebbles. This beach is located below steep and unstable oceanfront bluffs and there is an interesting sandstone rock formation on the beach called Flat Rock (or Indian Bath Tub Rock) which has a hole carved into it. This hole was created in the late 19th century by a man named William Bloodworth, who sought to create a coal mining shaft through this rock. Bloodworth attempted to create this shaft by blasting a tunnel into this rock with explosives. However, his plans failed as the tunnel-hole kept filling up with water.

While Flat Rock Beach at Torrey Pines does not have lifeguards, the blufftop area above the beach has restrooms and walking trails. Dogs are not allowed on this beach.

This area is also home to the critically endangered Torrey pine tree. You can explore the unique flora and fauna present in the state beach and the reserve through hiking trails present here. However, if you are planning to hike here, we recommend being careful as Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is known to have venomous rattlesnakes. The Visitor Center at Torrey Pines State Beach offers informative exhibits highlighting the state park’s unique natural history and geology, hosts informative docent-led nature hikes on weekends, and also has a native plant garden.
Parking
Getting to Flat Rock Beach at Torrey Pines is easy - in order to access Flat Rock Beach at Torrey Pines, you need to first reach the visitor center for Torrey Pines State Beach, which is easily accessible from Interstate Highway 5 via Genesee Avenue, which merges into North Torrey Pines Road. From North Torrey Pines Road, you need to turn toward Torrey Pines Park Road, which leads straight to the visitor center for Torrey Pines State Beach. This visitor center has a paid parking lot, and after parking here you need to hike along the Beach Trail which leads down along the bluff sides to Flat Rock Beach at Torrey Pines. We recommend being careful while getting down the bluff sides to the beach as the bluffs here are highly unstable and are highly prone to collapse. Alternatively, you can also access Flat Rock Beach at Torrey Pines by walking south along the coastline from another beach known as Torrey Pines State Beach - South Beach (which is situated near 12600 North Torrey Pines Road and has a paid parking lot). You can also get to Flat Rock Beach at Torrey Pines by walking north along the coastline from another beach called Black’s Beach which is situated near 2800 Torrey Pines Scenic Drive and has a free parking lot.

There are many attractions near Flat Rock Beach at Torrey Pines. Torrey Pines Golf Course is a 36-hole golf facility that offers a challenging and exciting session of golf. Birch Aquarium has interesting exhibits highlighting the vibrant marine life of the Pacific Ocean and it also hosts many other interesting events including summer camps for kids, academic lectures, and onsite tidepool tours.
