Located in the northern part of the city of San Clemente, El Portal Beach– which is also known as Buena Vista Beach and 204’s Beach, is narrow and has light brown sand that is mixed with gravel patches. The beach has multiple names because it is located near the intersection of West El Portal and Buena Vista streets, and also because 204 is the number sign along nearby railroad tracks. 

There are no lifeguards or other amenities here, so prepare accordingly.

The beach offers many activities including surfing, kayaking, canoeing, bodysurfing, boogie boarding, biking, wildlife watching, swimming, snorkeling, surfing, kite surfing, paddle boarding, boating, sunbathing, beach walking, and beachcombing. This beach has small yet consistent waves, making it ideal for beginner surfers. While swimming or engaging in water sports near El Portal Beach, look out for rip currents. The nearby San Clemente Pedestrian Beach Trail is a walking and biking trail offering access to nearby beaches including-Street Beach, a famous surfing spot, and also to San Clemente State Beach, which offers numerous activities including fishing, hiking, and camping.

Street parking is available at 1100 Buena Vista, and from here you can take the stairs down to the beach. These stairs also have an observation deck offering a view of the Pacific Ocean. Accessing the beach requires crossing an active railway line situated near the beach, so be careful.

There are many attractions near El Portal Beach including the shopping district Avenida Del Mar which features numerous designer stores, art galleries, and high-end restaurants. The Laguna Art Museum, which features more than 3,000 exquisite artworks, is also a short drive away. Another nearby attraction is the tiny yet exquisite St. Francis by The Sea, which was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s smallest cathedral and features beautiful Spanish tiles and stained glass art.

If you're looking for a restaurant, there are many nearby options. H.H Cotton’s, which is named after a local businessman and one of the establishers of San Clemente, is a high-end bar and restaurant and has excellent tacos, chili, fries, and burgers. Nalu’s Hawaiian Fish Grill & Tutu’s Kitchen is modestly priced and offers great Japanese and Hawaiian dishes. As another option, the family-friendly Little Thai Hut serves good Thai dishes including green curry, beef salad, and drunken noodles.

If you are looking for a hotel near El Portal Beach, there are many nearby options. The 4-Star Surf and Sand Resort is a 25-minute drive and has a spa, pool, and restaurant. The 3-Star Comfort Suites San Clemente Beach offers many amenities including a pool, hot tub, fitness center, and spa. Another good and affordable option is the modestly priced 2-Star House of Trestles which flaunts a funky vibe, features a lounge, and offers surfing lessons along with surfboards, wetsuits, and bikes on rent.
