Pahoehoe Beach is situated about three to four miles south of Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is a picturesque spot with a grassy area shaded by kiawe and palm trees, making it ideal for picnics and casual relaxation. The beach itself is more of a rocky shoreline with a low seawall protecting the park from large waves, which is not suitable for swimming. However, the clear blue waters offer excellent conditions for experienced snorkelers and scuba divers when the ocean is calm, with underwater formations and abundant marine life to explore. The beach is a great vantage point to watch sunsets and engage in outdoor games on the grassy area.

Pahoehoe Beach is easily accessible by car via Ali’i Drive. Despite its proximity to Kona, it is less crowded than some other nearby beaches like Magic Sands Beach. The area is frequented by local fishermen and offers a serene atmosphere for those seeking a peaceful day outdoors.

The combination of natural beauty, accessibility, and relaxed atmosphere makes Pahoehoe Beach a hidden gem for families and casual beachgoers who enjoy picnic spots and scenic views.

Near Pahoehoe Beach, several restaurants offer a range of dining experiences. On the Rocks is a casual seaside lounge known for its cocktails and bites. Magics Beach Grill offers contemporary Hawaiian fusion fare in a relaxed waterfront setting. For those seeking diverse flavors, Quinn's Almost by the Sea provides American seafood and Hawaiian specialties. Another popular spot is Umekes Fish Market Bar & Grill, famous for poke bowls and Hawaiian dishes in a laid-back setting. Lastly, Jackie Rey's Kailua-Kona offers a colorful and lively atmosphere with a focus on seafood specials.

For accommodations near Pahoehoe Beach, several hotels offer comfortable stays. The OUTRIGGER Kona Resort & Spa provides a relaxing resort experience with free Wi-Fi. The Kona Coast Resort features large kitchen villas and dining facilities. The Royal Kona Resort is known for its casual seafront accommodations with a private beach and spa. Lastly, the Aston Kona by the Sea offers upscale oceanfront suites with a private beach.

Pahoehoe Beach Park provides several amenities that enhance visitor experiences. The park includes restrooms, picnic tables, benches, and showers. The grassy area is shaded by palm and kiawe trees, making it a comfortable spot for picnics. The beach park does not allow pets. While swimming and snorkeling can be challenging due to rocky conditions, the park is well-suited for relaxation and scenic views.

Popular activities at Pahoehoe Beach include picnicking, watching sunsets, and outdoor games like wiffleball. Experienced snorkelers and scuba divers can explore the underwater environment when conditions are calm. However, swimming is not recommended due to the rocky shoreline and strong currents. Local fishermen often use the area, adding to the scenic charm. The nearbyAli’i Drive offers scenic views and access to other beaches and surfing spots.

Pahoehoe Beach Park offers limited disability access. While the nearby Hapuna Beach State Park has well-developed handicap-accessible facilities, Pahoehoe Beach does not provide such amenities explicitly. However, some of the nearby parks and beaches in Kailua-Kona offer handicapped-accessible restrooms and ramps, making them more suitable for visitors with disabilities.

Parking for Pahoehoe Beach is available along the shoulder of Ali’i Drive, although capacity is limited. Visitors may also use the parking lot at Magic Sands Beach nearby. While parking is generally free, spaces can be hard to find during peak times. For those planning to spend more time, early arrival is recommended.

Pahoehoe Beach is named after a type of lava flow, which is reflective of the volcanic origins of the Hawaiian Islands. The beach’s rocky shoreline is a testament to the geological history of the area. Historically, the Kona coast has been a significant site for both ancient Hawaiians and early European explorers. Today, the clear blue waters and unique underwater formations attract divers from around the world.

Pahoehoe Beach is near several attractions. Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park is only a few miles away, offering insights into Hawaiian history and culture. The Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail is another notable attraction, stretching along the coast and providing a scenic route for hikers and history enthusiasts. The nearby town of Kailua-Kona offers shopping and dining options.
