Located near the western portion of Santa Catalina Island, Cherry Cove is a cove with an unnamed beach with light brown sand. This beach is situated at the base of oceanfront mountains. The water around the beach in Cherry Cove is calm, clear, and largely shallow. A wharf is also present on the beach. The area around Cherry Cove has large numbers of Catalina cherry trees. As an interesting fact, parts of the 1935 Clark Gable movie Mutiny on the Bounty were filmed in Cherry Cove. Unfortunately, the beach in Cherry Cove and the area around it is currently leased to the Boy Scouts of America and is not open to the general public. The Boy Scouts of America operates a camping facility in this cove named Camp Cherry Valley. In addition, another organization named Catalina Island Marine Institute also operates a facility in Cherry Cove. The institute organizes interesting educational activities for school children including tide pooling, snorkeling, hiking, and kayaking tours around Cherry Cove. While you can’t access the beach in Cherry Cove, spots near the beach are available for mooring boats. If you are planning to moor your boat here, you can visit Catalina Island Company’s website for more information regarding boat mooring rules and charges in Cherry Cove. In addition, you can also access the southern part of Cherry Cove via boat and scuba dive, and spearfish in the water here. Divers explore reef and kelp forests present in this part of Cherry Cove and see many kinds of fish and marine invertebrates here including sea bass (which breed here in the spring), lobsters, and sheepshead.
