Overview

Located in the city of Sausalito, Fort Baker Beach is a very small and narrow beach that is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Also known as Horseshoe Cove, Fort Baker Beach is on the south side of Fort Baker, a historic army post that was built in the 1900s.  Fort Baker Beach is situated west of two historic gun installations named Battery Cavallo and Battery Yates – and is a perfect spot for kayaking.

Amenities

Fort Baker Beach is a dog-friendly beach and offers many amenities including restrooms, picnic tables, trails, military sites, a fishing pier, a clubhouse, and a museum named Bay Area Discovery Museum. If you are looking for additional amenities, there are sailing lessons and boat rentals available for military members on the beach.

There are many fun activities at Fort Baker Beach including swimming, kayaking, fishing, crabbing, sailing, wildlife watching, photography, picnicking, and beach walking.

Parking

Getting to Fort Baker Beach is easy – after you get off of Highway 101, drive down to 1633 Sommerville Road to reach here. There is free street parking available along the road.

Attractions

If you are looking for nearby attractions, there are many options within a 10-minute drive of Fort Baker Beach. Birdwatchers flock to Rodeo Lagoon to see an incredible variety of birds and animals including egrets, great blue herons, tidewater goby, and California brown pelican. If you like hiking, Rodeo Beach Coastal Trail Loop is a steep and dog-friendly loop trail – it is five miles long and follows the bluffs above the Pacific Ocean and Rodeo Beach. Bird Island’s white cliffs offer a prime viewing spot and are covered with cormorants, gulls, and pelicans. Another great attraction near Fort Baker Beach is The Marin Headlands Art Institute, an arts organization that hosts an internationally recognized artist-in-residence program and offers tours and exhibitions.

If you get hungry, you can drive 15 minutes to many restaurants near Fort Baker Beach. The national award-winning oceanfront Italian restaurant Luna Blu offers seafood items along with pasta, pizza, and drinks. Bayside Café serves breakfast options that include pancakes, omelets, sandwiches, tacos, and burgers. Another good restaurant near Fort Baker Beach is the vegetarian-friendly Indian restaurant Avatar’s that features California Indian fusion food including Punjabi burritos, pumpkin enchiladas, and basmati trio.
