Overview
Located in the Shell Beach region of the city of Pismo Beach, Eldwayen Ocean Park is a one-and-a-half-mile stretch of the grassy oceanside park which sits atop a bluff alongside a narrow rocky strip of beach facing the Pacific Ocean.
Amenities
The park doesn’t have lifeguards or showers but has a few amenities including sitting areas, barbecue areas, and an observation deck along with permitting pets on a leash.
Activities
The park and the beach offer many activities including biking, tide pooling, surfing, picnicking, swimming, kayaking, fishing, beachcombing, and wildlife watching. It is advisable to stay clear of the areas blocked off near the edges of the bluff as they may collapse due to erosion. Stairs to the beach earlier could be found near the northern end of the park, which has now eroded away. You can access the beach via another flight of stairs which is situated a bit further up north at the end of Vista Del Mar Avenue. You can also check out the unique marine life present on the beach including dolphins, sea lions, sea otters, and seals. You can also explore the spectacular natural wonders along the shoreline such as sea caves, arches, and coves near Dinosaur Caves Park by kayak. However, be aware of the water currents here which can make swimming dangerous.
Parking
The park is easily accessible from US Highway 101, and free parking is available along Ocean Boulevard.
Attractions
There are also other attractions near the park including the Chapman Estate, a Tudor-style manor built in the early 20th century. Visitors can marvel at its art collection and charming architecture via guided tours organized by the estate.
Restaurants
If you're looking for a restaurant, there are several many good nearby restaurants. Shell Beach Brewhouse is a brewpub that’s a short walk away that has been commended by publications like the San Luis Obispo Tribune. The bar has a line-up of 30 beer taps consisting of some of the finest craft beers in the area along with a delicious range of half-pound burgers and tacos. You can also head to The Steaming Bean, which is very close to Shell Beach Brewhouse. This family-friendly place offers some of the best coffee in the city and is also renowned for its light atmosphere and funky vibe! The place serves light yet tasty lunches and breakfasts. Another great dining option is Ventana Grill, which is a short drive away and is situated on the ocean, and is renowned for its amazing fusion of Latin American and Californian dishes and generous portions.
