Located on the eastern side of the city of Malibu, La Costa Beach is an excellent surfing destination and one mile in length. Although all beaches in California are public beaches, La Costa is considered private since there is no direct public access - only the houses and condos along Pacific Coast Highway between Rambla Vista Drive and Las Flores Canyon Road have access. These residents have memberships to the private La Costa Beach Club, which is the only way to directly access the beach. If you don’t mind a long walk, you can go through the public access point on Carbon Beach at 22126 Pacific Coast Highway and walk east for a mile at low tides. Once you are on the beach, La Costa Beach Club offers surfboards, paddleboards, and a volleyball court for its members. You can also swim here, but during high tide La Costa Beach becomes very narrow and wet.
If you are looking for nearby attractions, Malibu Pier is a three-minute drive away – it is a tourist attraction that’s famous for its iconic dual white towers, rough-hewn planks, two restaurants, five stores, and an observation deck where you can fish and look for dolphins. If you like hiking, Big Rock Trail is 1,895 feet tall and provides many trails to the peak, a vista point providing an incredible view of the area. Spread across 9,000 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains 2,375 feet above the Pacific Ocean, Topanga Lookout Trailhead offers two miles round trip hikes with 360-degree mountain and ocean views. It is also a stop-off for many mountain bikers. Legacy Park is situated nearby and features wildlife areas, parks, and bodies of water. As another option, Venice Beach Boardwalk is a lively famed seaside promenade featuring street performers, bodybuilders, restaurants, tourist shops, areas for skateboarding, and kayak and boat riding facilities.
