The water near the beach is home to a variety of animals including dolphins, seals, sea lions, migrating whales (between December to April), and also to a variety of aquatic birds including gulls, sanderlings, and brown pelicans. Fishing is also a popular activity at Half Moon Bay State Beach - Roosevelt Beach - from late spring through summer you can find large numbers of surf smelt here along with other larger fish including striped bass and halibut. Half Moon Bay State Beach - Roosevelt Beach is ideal for those looking for a quieter beach experience as this beach has few visitors due to its hard access route. It also provides a nice view of the neighboring Pillar Point Harbor and the residential neighborhood of Miramar. Half Moon Bay State Beach, the state park within which Half Moon State Beach - Roosevelt Beach is situated, also offers many activities. The Coastside Trail is a hiking and biking trail located along the state park’s eastern boundary which highlights its vibrant coastal landscape – it can be used to explore other beaches of the state park including Venice Beach and Francis Beach. An equestrian trail is also available in the state park. Half Moon Bay State Beach’s Visitor Center also offers interesting exhibits offering a view into the vibrant natural and cultural history of the state park. The Visitor Center is open Thursday through Sunday between 10 am to 4 pm during summers. The portion of the state park around Frenchman’s Creek features a variety of archaeological sites belonging to the Native American Ohlone people.
