Fargo Beach, located at 1300 W. Fargo Ave. in Chicago, Illinois, is one of the city's smaller street-end beaches. It was named after James C. Fargo, a prominent North Side real-estate developer. The beach is currently closed due to erosion, but visitors can enjoy nearby Marion Mahony Griffin Beach instead. Fargo Beach was part of a group of 18 street-end beaches acquired by the Chicago Park District in 1959, primarily serving the Rogers Park neighborhood. These beaches were known for their lack of facilities, such as changing rooms, but were staffed by lifeguards.
Historically, Fargo Beach and similar street-end beaches were important for providing recreational opportunities to a growing population of apartment dwellers in the area.
The beach's closure highlights the ongoing challenges of shoreline erosion affecting many of Chicago's beaches.
