Overview
Located in Bahia Honda Key, Sandspur Beach is a large beach that has soft white sand and shallow and clear water. This beach is situated on the southern side of Bahia Honda Key and it is a part of a state park named Bahia Honda State Park. Tropical vegetation is also present near this beach. Sandspur Beach is a favorite of Randall Kaplan, the world’s foremost beach expert who is known as Mr. Beach. Unfortunately, Sandspur Beach is currently closed to the general public as it is undergoing restoration from the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Irma. If you are looking for other nearby beaches that allow public access, you can visit the state park’s other open beaches including Calusa Beach and Loggerhead Beach.

There are many attractions near Sandspur Beach. Veterans Memorial Park is an oceanfront recreational park that has many amenities including barbecue areas, pavilions, picnic tables, showers, and restrooms. Fred the Tree is an interesting single Australian pine tree that has been growing on the Old Seven Mile Bridge. This tree is a popular local icon and has prospered despite the harsh sun rays, salty water, and strong winds of the region. This tree also survived the destruction wreaked by Hurricane Irma in 2017. Each year around Christmas, locals often decorate Fred with lights and ornaments, resulting in an amazing visual marvel. If you are looking for another attraction near Sandspur Beach, National Key Deer Refuge is spread over 9,200 acres and has many habitats including pine rockland forests, tropical hardwood hammock forests, salt marsh wetlands, and mangrove forests. The refuge is home to 23 species of endangered plants and animals. You can view many kinds of animals and birds here including key deer, lower keys marsh rabbit, ospreys, peregrine falcon, rattlesnakes, and turtles. The refuge also has a nature center that offers interesting interpretive exhibitions. Another interesting feature of this refuge is the Blue Hole which is a former limestone quarry now full of freshwater. This area is easily accessible via a trail and it offers a fantastic wildlife watching experience.
