Overview
Located in Florida’s Space Coast region, Klondike Beach is an extremely long white-sand beach that is a part of Canaveral National Seashore. This beach was featured in the Lonely Planet magazine’s article "Launching into the wilderness of Florida's Space Coast." This beach is usually open between 6 am and 8 pm.
Amenities
Klondike Beach does not have lifeguards or any other public amenities, so plan accordingly. Dogs are not allowed here.
Activities
Klondike Beach offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, hiking, fishing, picnicking, swimming, surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, horse riding, skimboarding, boogie boarding, jet-skiing, water-skiing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, surf-skiing, and wildlife watching.
The water here occasionally offers fun surfing waves, making it ideal for surfers. However, if you are planning to surf or swim here, we recommend being careful because the water here is known to have unpredictable rip currents. Jellyfish are also occasionally found here and they can inflict powerful stings.
This beach also offers a fun oceanfront horse riding experience. However, if you are planning to ride your horse here, please note that you need a permit. You can visit Canaveral National Seashore’s web page on the National Park Service’s website for more information regarding the permit rules. If you like fishing, you can catch many kinds of fish in the water here, including whiting, bluefish, and pompano.
This beach is ideal for visitors looking for a quiet beach experience because it sees fewer visitors than other nearby beaches. In addition, Canaveral National Seashore – within which Klondike Beach is located – has many other fun things to explore including nature trails, historic sites, a large lagoon, a campground, and a Cape Canaveral National Seashore visitor center with interesting exhibitions.
Disability Access
Klondike Beach does not offer wheelchair access to visitors with disabilities.
Parking
Getting to Klondike Beach can get considerably difficult – the only way to reach this beach is by hiking on a trail named the Klondike Beach Trail. You can access this trail either from the southern end of a nearby beach named Apollo Beach or from the northern end of another nearby beach named Playalinda Beach. Both Apollo Beach and Playalinda Beach are easily accessible from Interstate 95 and both have multiple free parking lots.
Please note that you need to pay an entrance fee to visit Canaveral National Seashore – the entrance fee here is $25 for vehicles, $20 for motorcycles, and $15 per pedestrian/bicycles for 7 days. You need to purchase a backcountry permit from the entrance station for Canaveral National Seashore to hike on Klondike Beach Trail. If you are planning to purchase a permit for hiking here, you can visit the National Park Service’s website for more information regarding the permit. In addition, please note that this trail is also seasonally closed to tourists. You can the authorities at contact Canaveral National Seashore at (321) 267-1110 for more information. It is important to note that the beach can also be occasionally dirty and have high amounts of trash. To keep our beaches and oceans clean, please remember to throw your trash away before you leave.
Fun Fact
If you like taking pictures with amazing views, Klondike Beach offers amazing Instagram-worthy views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Klondike Park waterfront. In addition, sea turtles also use this beach as a seasonal nesting site.
Attractions
There are many attractions near Klondike Park Beach within a 50-minute-drive. Ponce Inlet Light Station & Museum is a historic site that has a lighthouse from 1835 named Ponce de Leon Inlet Light and it also has other historic structures including the lighthouse keeper’s quarters and the oil storage building. It offers an interesting insight into local history. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to more than 500 species of animals and it also has many habitats including hardwood hammocks and wetlands – this refuge offers many fun activities including seasonal hunting, fishing, hiking, wildlife watching, and boating. The refuge’s visitor center offers interesting exhibits and a bookstore/gift shop and it also hosts movie screenings. Kennedy Space Center is a spaceport that is managed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) – this spaceport’s visitor complex has many interesting exhibits related to space exploration and aeronautics and you can also see interesting rocket launches here. This center also hosts many fun events including movie screenings, guided tours of the spaceport premises, and interactive lunches with astronauts.
Chain of Lakes Park is a 92-acre recreational park that has multiple lakes and wetlands and it also has many other amenities including softball fields, soccer fields, playgrounds, a walking trail, a pavilion, a wildlife watching tower, a fishing dock, a playground, a restroom, and a biking path. If you are looking for another attraction near the beach, the American Space Museum has many interesting space-related memorabilia and technology including photographs, equipment, space shuttle tiles, and flight suits, along with launch consoles from Launch Complex 36. The museum premises also have the U.S. Space Walk of Fame and monuments dedicated to the United States’ various space programs.
Restaurants
If you get hungry, there are many restaurants near Klondike Beach within an hour’s drive. JB’s Fish Camp is famous for serving amazing seafood with Southern-style and Cajun culinary influences – it also serves great sandwiches, chicken dishes, soups, and salads. Chucherias is an upscale restaurant that offers a variety of dishes with Latin American, Caribbean, and Spanish influences including steak, chicken, soups, salads, and seafood. Pier 220 Seafood and Grill is a waterfront restaurant that offers many amazing dishes including seafood, chicken dishes, tacos, burgers, sandwiches, and salads – this restaurant offers live music performances. Orleans Bistro and Bar is known for serving fantastic Cajun and Creole dishes including etouffee, gumbo, and jambalaya – it also offers live music performances on Fridays and Saturdays and it also has a pool table and darts. If you are looking for another good and affordable nearby restaurant, Mi Mexico Restaurant serves amazing Mexican dishes including tacos, burritos, and quesadillas.
