Overview

Located in the city of Trinidad, Old Home Beach - also previously known as Indian Beach - is a beach with light brown sand and multiple rock formations. The beach is situated below oceanfront bluffs. The beach is surrounded by rocky headlands on both sides and multiple offshore sea-stacks are also present near this beach. Old Home Beach does not have lifeguards or any other amenities. However, the area around the beach has benches. Dogs are allowed on the beach.

Activities

Old Home Beach offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, tidepooling, fishing, wildlife watching, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. The water near this beach is relatively calmer than other Trinidad beaches. However, the water here is still generally unsafe for aquatic recreational activities including swimming and surfing due to extremely dangerous currents, strong waves, and cold temperatures. Nevertheless, the experienced kayakers and canoers occasionally enter the water here in order to have a fun kayaking and canoeing session. Depending on the time of the year, you can see many kinds of animals in the water near the beach including seals and sea lions. During low tide, you can also explore interesting tidepools in the northern part of Old Home Beach. If you like birdwatching, you can also watch many kinds of seabirds around Old Home Beach. If you are planning to fish in the water near Old Home Beach, we recommend that you ensure compliance with the local fishing regulations. The offshore sea stacks present around Old Home Beach offer some amazing Instagram-worthy photos. In addition, the beach also offers incredible views of a nearby beautiful promontory named Trinidad Head.

Parking

 There are two major ways to access Old Home Beach - an access trail with a stairway leading to Old Home Beach is situated near the intersection of Trinity Street and Edwards Street. A free parking lot is available near this intersection. As another access option, you can also walk to Old Home Beach via the Parker Creek Trail, which is situated at the end of Parker Creek Lane. In addition, you can also access Parker Creek Trail via Wagner Street. 

Fun Fact

As an interesting fact the area around this beach was once the site of a Native American Yurok village named Tsurai. 

Attractions

There are many attractions near Old Home Beach. Patrick’s Point State Park is spread over one square mile. The park has hiking and biking trails which offer a unique insight into the vibrant coastal biodiversity of Humboldt County. In addition, the state park also has a visitor center, a campground (which accommodates both tents and RVs), a native plant garden, and a reconstructed Native American Yurok village (known as the Sumêg Village). The Sumêg Village also organizes interesting Native American cultural ceremonies which offer a unique and memorable insight into the culture and beliefs of the local Indigenous people. As an interesting fact, portions of the 1997 film The Lost World: Jurassic Park were filmed in this state park. If you are planning to camp in Patrick’s Point State Park, you can visit the state park’s webpage in the California Department of Parks and Recreation’s website for more helpful information regarding the camp rules and amenities. The Old Town district of the nearby city of Eureka is 30 minutes away by car and is a part of the United States National Register of Historic Places. The Old Town district consists of over 150 splendid houses dating back to the Victorian era and offers a unique insight into Humboldt County’s rich history. In addition, this district also has shopping stores and beautiful vibrant murals. If you are looking for another attraction near Old Home Beach, the McKinleyville Totem Pole is around 160 feet tall and is reputedly one of the largest totem poles in the world to be carved from a single tree.

Restaurants

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants near Old Home Beach. The Larrupin’ Cafe is an upscale restaurant which serves outstanding New American cuisine. Sunset Restaurant serves amazing steaks, salads, seafood, pastas, and soups. If you are looking for another good and affordable restaurant near Old Home Beach, The Lighthouse Grill offers delicious burgers, sandwiches, fries, and seafood. In addition, the restaurant is also famous for serving amazing mash-potato cones.

Hotels

If you are looking for a hotel near Old Home Beach, there are many great nearby options. Lost Whale Inn offers many amenities including beautiful gardens, an outdoor hot tub, a sauna, complimentary breakfast, and afternoon tea and wine. A more affordable hotel is the Turtle Rocks Oceanfront Inn which has communal decks for guests including a two-tier whale watching area with seats.  In addition, the hotel also offers complimentary breakfast, desserts during afternoons, and coffee/tea and snacks throughout the day. If you are looking for another good and affordable hotel near Old Home Beach, the 2-Star Emerald Forest Cabins & RV offers accommodation in exquisite cabins. The hotel also offers many amenities including bike rentals, a playground and horseshoe pits, a video arcade, a store, and a laundry room.
