Located in the city of Auberry, Camp Oljato is a Boy Scout camp that has a very small and narrow beach situated on the shores of Huntington Lake. Huntington Lake is a 1,441 acre man-made lake that was created in 1912. The beach at Camp Oljato is also known as Camp Oljato Beach and is in front of a sheltered cove on the northwest side of the point where Coon Creek meets Huntington Lake. Camp Oljato was founded in 1941 and the word Oljato in the Native American tribe of Navajo means “Star Light on the Waters.” Camp Oljato is located at the height of 7,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range and is surrounded by pine trees and plenty of non-poisonous wildflowers. The summer camp at Camp Oljato starts from the last week of June and there are six-week-long summer sessions. Although Camp Oljato Beach does not have lifeguards, it offers many amenities including restrooms, showers, picnic tables, campsites, fire pits, and boat ramps. There are many fun activities at Camp Oljato Beach including swimming, camping, hiking, sailing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, horseback riding, and shooting sports like rifle, shotgun, and archery. Getting to Camp Oljato requires a little bit of work – you can access the camp by taking a one-mile-long pontoon boat ride across Huntington Lake from 61953 Huntington Lake Road where you will find the camp’s staff at the docks. Please note that these boats run on a regular basis during the Scout camping season from mid-June to mid-August.
