Overview
Located near the mouth of the Eel River, Crab County Park is a small Humboldt County Park that offers access to a riverfront beach named Crab Park Beach. Crab County Park Beach is a small beach with brown sand and sparse vegetation. This beach is protected from the ocean waves by a sandy spit that is part of the nearby Eel River Wildlife Area. Crab County Park Beach does not have lifeguards or any other amenities, so plan your trip accordingly. Dogs are allowed on the beach off-leash. Getting to Crab County Park is easy - take the Loleta Drive exit from United States Highway 101 and follow Loleta Drive towards the west. From Loleta Drive, turn right towards Eel River Drive, and then turn left on Cannibal Island Road. Crab Park is located at the end of Cannibal Island Road where there is also a nearby free parking lot. From this parking lot, you can easily walk to the beach via a hiking trail. Since the parking spaces fill up early, we recommend visiting this beach early.
Activities
Crab Park Beach offers many activities including birdwatching, horse riding, beach diving, swimming canoeing, and kayaking. The water near this beach is generally calm, which makes it ideal for amateur kayakers, canoers, and swimmers. Kayakers occasionally launch their kayaks from the beaches in this state park to explore the beautiful Eel River shoreline. Crab Park Beach also offers fantastic Instagram-worthy views of the Pacific Ocean and this also makes it a great picnicking spot. You can also view many kinds of aquatic mammals in the water near this beach including seals, sea lions, and sea otters. If you like birdwatching, you can also view many kinds of birds near this beach including snipes, waterfowl, and many kinds of upland game birds. In addition, a designated waterfowl hunting area is available for use on this beach and the area around it during hunting season from October to January. If you are planning to fish in the water near Crab Park Beach, please make sure to follow the local fishing regulations. You can also explore the interesting sand dunes and driftwoods present around this beach via hiking and equestrian trails.
