Montana De Oro State Park(Sandspit Beach)

Located in the city of San Luis Obispo, Montana de Oro State Park - Sandspit Beach is a two-mile-long, two-mile-wide, and the northernmost beach of Montana de Oro State Park.  Spread across 8,000 acres, Montana de Oro State Park features a seven-mile shoreline, beaches, dunes, canyons, and hills, one of which is the 1,347-feet-long Valencia Peak.  Montana de Oro State Park - Sandspit Beach is situated south of the city of Morro Bay and north of a protected habitat known as Morro Dunes Natural Preserve – an awesome RV camping spot.  Although Montana de Oro State Park - Sandspit Beach does not have lifeguards, it offers many amenities including restrooms, picnic tables, trails, and dunes. 

If you are looking for additional amenities, you can drive six minutes south to a free campground named Islay Creek Campground that has tents, RV sites, and picnic tables.  Montana de Oro State Park - Sandspit Beach is great for surfing and is the only surfing beach in Montana de Oro State Park. 

In addition to surfing, there are many fun activities at Montana de Oro State Park - Sandspit Beach, including fishing, hiking, beachcombing, and beach walking. 

Getting to Montana de Oro State Park - Sandspit Beach is very easy – after you get off of Pecho Valley Road, turn right and drive down to the end of Sandspit Road where you will find a free parking lot. After parking, you will need to walk a few yards northwest on a wide trail to reach the beach.

If you are looking for attractions near Montana de Oro State Park - Sandspit Beach, you can drive 30 minutes to Central Coast Aquarium – it is a small non-profit aquarium that provides hands-on marine life educational programs and interactive experiences.  Monarch Butterfly Grove is a nature preserve center and home to thousands of monarch butterflies that visitors can see starting from late October to February.  If you like hot springs, Avila Hot Springs is a public swimming pool that was discovered in 1907 and offers a hot mineral soaking pool, a freshwater pool with slides, RVs, camping sites, and bike rentals.  Another incredible attraction near Montana de Oro State Park - Sandspit Beach is the Museum of Natural History, a local history museum that provides interactive ecology exhibitions.
