Located in the village resort of Sesmarias, in the city of Albufeira, Praia de Sao Rafael is a small but wide beige sand beach with many rocky formations.  This iconic beach is positioned adjacent to the famous Praia dos Arrifes and has a beautiful background of golden limestone cliffs, hidden caves, grottoes, coastal vegetation, and an upscale restaurant, which together provide Instagram-worthy views of the vast North Atlantic Ocean.   It features several solitary rock formations jutting out of the sea, which adds allure to its beauty and makes it a picturesque spot.   Praia de Sao Rafael, Portugal, has been awarded the Blue Flag certification due to its cleanliness and water quality standards.

Dogs are not allowed here, and the beach is open from sunrise until sunset.

Praia de Sao Rafael does not offer an access path for people with disabilities.

Getting to Praia de Sao Rafael is easy - the beach has a few parking spots located at R. dos Arrifes, 8200-613, which is easily accessible via State Road M526. After parking, visitors have to hike down a rugged path to access the beach. Alternatively, there is another parking lot located at the end of Caminho da Praia Grande, which provides easy access to the beach.  

It is worth noting that there are few parking spaces designated for disabled drivers who are wearing a blue badge.

These unique limestone rocky formations have been eroded over a long period of time to form distinctive formations and peculiar shapes.   Interestingly, many of these have names such as Ninho das Andorinhas, which means the Swallow’s Nest, and Ponte Pequena, which means the Small Bridge. 

The beach is a popular place to watch the sunset over the Iberian Peninsula.
