Grommet Island Park is a unique 15,000 square foot beach park located at 100 2nd Street, Virginia Beach, VA. It is the first fully accessible oceanfront park in the United States, designed to ensure everyone can enjoy the beach, regardless of physical ability. The park features a playground with poured-in-place surfacing, raised sand tables for sandcastle building, a sensory board, and sculptural features like dolphins and surfboards. It also offers beach wheelchairs free of charge and accessible seating areas. The park's design was inspired by Josh Thompson, a local surfer diagnosed with ALS, and his family's efforts to create an inclusive space for all.
Grommet Island Park is not only a place for recreation but also a symbol of community and accessibility. It hosts the annual JT Walk, which raises funds for ALS research and park maintenance.
The park's proximity to the Virginia Beach Boardwalk and other attractions makes it a central spot for both locals and tourists to enjoy the oceanfront scenery and activities like beach volleyball and picnicking.
