Ahalanui Park is a unique beach destination located in the Malama Ki Forest Reserve near Pahoa, Hawaii. It was once famous for its family-friendly, volcanically heated pool. The pool was naturally fed by thermal vents but also connected to the ocean by a small inlet, allowing tropical fish to enter. Unfortunately, due to a lava flow from Kilauea's 2018 eruption, the park is currently closed. Its scenic atmosphere, surrounded by coconut palms and ocean views, made it a perfect spot for relaxation and picnics.

The park's unique volcanic heating provided water temperatures ranging from 90 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, making it an ideal spot for warm bathing. However, like many natural hot springs, it carried a slight sulfur smell due to its volcanic origins. The beach itself is characterized by its volcanic black sand, common in the Puna district of the Big Island.

Despite its closure, Ahalanui remains a cherished memory for many who have visited the area, highlighting the beauty and resilience of Hawaii's volcanic landscapes.

Near Ahalanui Park, you can find several delightful dining options in Pahoa. Kaleo's Bar & Grill offers innovative Asian-American dishes in a lively atmosphere with live music, perfect for lunch or dinner. Pahoa Fresh Fish is a no-frills seafood spot serving fried seafood with waffle fries in a casual setting. For Thai cuisine lovers, Ning's Thai Cuisine serves typical Thai dishes in a cozy cafe environment. Lastly, Panchos Tacos provides Mexican flavors with fast service and a lively vibe.

For accommodations, the Pahoa Village Hostel is a local favorite, offering affordable stays with a social atmosphere and basic amenities like free Wi-Fi. However, options are limited in the immediate area. The Pahoa Village Hostel is among the few choices available, serving as both a hotel and hostel.

Ahalanui Park, while closed, previously offered several amenities that made it an ideal spot for families and visitors. It featured restrooms, showers, picnic areas, and barbecue facilities, making it a great spot for outdoor activities. Lifeguards were present during the day to ensure safety. The park also provided easy access stairs into the pool and had parking available.

Despite its current state, these amenities once contributed to a welcoming environment for picnics and relaxation, even for those not swimming. The park's facilities were well-maintained and free, making it accessible to all visitors.

Though Ahalanui Park is currently closed, it was once a haven for swimming and relaxation. The volcanically heated pool made it perfect for warm-water enthusiasts, especially during cooler months. The absence of strong currents due to the breakwater ensured safety for all bathers, including families with children. The proximity to the ocean allowed small fish to swim in the pool, adding a unique touch to the bathing experience.

Before its closure, the park was also suitable for picnics and sunbathing. The surrounding coastal area offers opportunities for hiking and exploring nearby volcanic landscapes for adventure seekers.

Prior to its closure, Ahalanui Park had taken steps to ensure accessibility. The park featured accessible ramps leading into the pool, making it easier for people with mobility issues to enter. Additionally, there were wheelchair-accessible restrooms available. However, the closure has put these facilities out of use for the time being.

Ahalanui Park offered free parking facilities for its visitors during its operational days. The parking area was located near the entrance, providing easy access to the park's amenities and the beach. The parking lot was generally spacious enough to accommodate most visitors, although it might get crowded during peak tourist seasons.

Unfortunately, due to the park's closure, parking is no longer an option here.

Ahalanui Park's uniqueness lies in its volcanically heated pool, which was not only a rare occurrence but also provided therapeutic warmth to its visitors. The park was situated in a region known for its volcanic activity, with the 2018 Kilauea eruption affecting many areas nearby. The presence of sulfur due to volcanic activity could sometimes be detected in the water, a natural outcome of the volcanic heating process.

Before its closure, Ahalanui Park was a cherished gem for both locals and tourists, offering a relaxing and educational experience about Hawaii's unique geology.

The Malama Ki Forest Reserve, where Ahalanui Park is located, offers beautiful natural landscapes and hiking trails. The nearby Pahoa Village provides a charming small-town experience with shops and local eateries. Visitors can explore the volcanic landscapes of the Puna district, including the lava flows that have shaped the region. For those interested in natural wonders, the Kilauea Volcano area is a short drive away, offering opportunities to observe volcanic activity and explore volcanic environments.
