Overview
Located along the Tybee Island shoreline, Mid Beach – also known as Tybee Island Mid Beach and Tybee Mid Island Beach – is a one-and-half mile long white-sand beach.
Amenities
Mid Beach has lifeguards between mid-May and September – please note that lifeguards are usually deployed at the beach’s northern and southern ends. In addition to lifeguards, the beach also has many other amenities including nearby restrooms (available at the nearby Memorial Park), showers, nearby beach chair rental facilities, nearby wooden swings, and multiple piers. Dogs are not allowed at Mid Beach.
Activities
Mid Beach offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, wildlife watching, beachcombing, picnicking, fishing, swimming, surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, paddle boarding, surf-skiing, water-skiing, kayaking, canoeing, jet-skiing, boating, wakeboarding, scuba diving, and parasailing.
Mid Beach is ideal for beginner swimmers because the water here usually has gentle waves. Scuba divers and snorkelers also visit Mid Beach to explore its vibrant marine landscape and biodiversity. If you are planning to swim, surf, kayak, canoe, scuba dive, or snorkel near Mid Beach, we recommend being careful because the water here is known to have unpredictable rip currents, particularly near its southern part. In addition, the water here can also get particularly cold in the winters. The water here also has low visibility. It is also important to note that water activities are only allowed within 50 yards of Mid Beach’s shoreline.
Disability Access
Mid Beach offers a mobility mat for visitors with disabilities at one of its entrances – this entrance is located along 2nd Avenue. In addition, beach wheelchairs are also available near this beach for visitors with disabilities – the beach wheelchairs are available near a pier named Tybee Pier that is located at the end of Tybrisa Street.
Parking
Getting to Mid Beach is easy – the beach is located along Butler Avenue – that is a part of United States Highway 80 – between Butler Avenue’s intersections with 1st Street and 14th Street. There are multiple walkways leading to Mid Beach near Butler Avenue, and there are metered street parking spaces near these walkways. The metered street parking spaces at Mid Beach charge $3.50 for an hour. These street parking spaces require parking fees between 8 am and 8 pm. We recommend visiting this beach early because the street parking spaces here often get filled up quickly.
Fun Fact
You can see loggerhead sea turtles near Mid Beach – these endangered turtles also use Mid Beach as a seasonal nesting site between May and October. In addition, Mid Beach also offers excellent Instagram-worthy views of the Georgian shoreline and the Atlantic Ocean, usually during evenings.
Attractions
There are many attractions near Mid Beach. Fort Pulaski National Monument has the remnants of an early 19th century fort named Fort Pulaski. The area around Fort Pulaski offers a fun hiking experience and you can see many kinds of birds here including bald eagles and piping plovers. Cocskpur Island Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse built in the 19th century and it is located on an islet near Savannah named Cockspur Island. While this lighthouse is currently closed to the public, you can see it from a nearby walking trail. Fort Screven is a fortification that was built around 1875 – visitors can currently explore a part of the fort’s coastal batteries. In addition, one of Fort Screven’s coastal batteries – named Battery Garland – has the Tybee Island Museum that offers interesting historic exhibits. Tybee Island Light Station was initially constructed in 1736 and it is 145-feet tall. The lighthouse premises also has three light keeper’s cottages and this lighthouse offers an intriguing insight into Tybee Island’s history. If you are looking for another attraction near Mid Beach, the Tybee Pier is an amazing fishing site and it also offers Instagram-worthy views of the Atlantic Ocean – the pier also has a pavilion and it hosts many fun events including dances and live music performances.

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants near Mid Beach. The Deck Beach Bar is a waterfront restaurant that offers a variety of delicious dishes with international culinary influences including Southern-style dishes, burgers, sandwiches, seafood, and salads. Alligator Soul Restaurant is an upscale restaurant that is 35 minutes away by car and offers amazing gourmet dishes with Southern-style culinary influences. The Crab Shack is a popular waterfront restaurant that is known for serving amazing seafood – it has been listed as one of the best restaurants in Savannah by the Condé Nast Traveler magazine. Salt Island Fish and Beer is a waterfront restaurant that offers amazing seafood, along with other dishes including burgers, short ribs, and kalua pork. Agave Bar & Grill offers a variety of amazing delicious dishes including fajitas, quesadillas, Mexican-style seafood, and burritos – this restaurant also serves amazing margaritas. If you are looking for another good and affordable restaurant near Mid Beach, Huc-A-Poo's Bites and Booze offers delicious pizzas and it also offers many amazing dishes including nachos, hot dogs, wraps, salads, and chilis.

The 4-Star The Kimpton Brice Hotel is also 33-minutes away by car and it offers many amenities including a seasonal pool, bike loaner facilities, a garden, a fitness center, a wine-tasting session, and a restaurant. A more affordable hotel is the 3.5-StarDeSoto Beach Hotel that offers many amenities including a game room, a pool, rental facilities for beach chairs and umbrellas, and a sundeck.
