Located along the La Jolla shoreline, Whispering Sands Beach is a rocky beach with few sandy parts. There is a rocky reef in the water near Whispering Sands Beach known as Horseshoe Reef or simply as Horseshoe. The area near this beach is sometimes known as "Nicholson Point Park." However, it is important to note that there is no grassy park here. As an interesting fact, Whispering Sands Beach gets its name from the alleged squeaking and whispering sounds produced by the dry sand here when you walk upon it. A possible explanation for this phenomenon is that the sound is produced due to friction from the perfectly spherical and dry sand particles rubbing against each other when someone walks upon them. Whispering Sands Beach does not have lifeguards or any other amenities, so plan your trip accordingly. The beach allows dogs on a leash before 9 am and after 6 pm between April and October. Between November and March, the beach allows dogs before 9 am and after 4 pm.
