Located on the Andalucian coast in the province of Cadiz, Playa del Puerco is a beautiful beach next to the more popular Playa de la Barrosa to the north. This two-kilometer long, 45-meter wide stretch of shore offers soft, golden sand and clear Atlantic waters, with lush hedges lining one side of the beach providing a spectacular view. Street parking is available, and from there it’s only a 5 to 10-minute walk to the beach. The trail to the beach is rough and can be difficult, so travelers that are older or with reduced mobility should be careful.
Once you’re on the beach, you’ll find amenities that include bathrooms, showers, lifeguards, and sunbed lounge rentals. The currents at Playa del Puerco are usually moderate, and activities like swimming and surfing are popular. Walking along the shore is a great experience here, especially when the flowers bloom during the spring. Horseback riding tours are also available. If you walk north along the beach toward Playa de la Barrosa, you’ll see the Torre del Puerco, a 16th-century watchtower that offers amazing elevated views of the beach and ocean at sunset.
If you’re hungry, head to Chiringuito Roche which is located near the middle of the beach and is just a one-minute walk from the water. This beachside restaurant serves delicious, simple Spanish food and offers refreshing drinks in a comfortable outdoor setting. For a fancier option, walk five minutes north from the Torre del Puerco watchtower to Atenas Playa. This beachside bar and restaurant has a vibrant outdoor ambiance, delicious food and cocktails, and live music around sunset time.
After a long day, we recommend staying at Ilunion Calas de Conil, a beachfront hotel with ocean views, private balconies, and spacious rooms with modern décor. The hotel also has a children’s play area, a spa with a Turkish bath and Vichy showers, and a refined restaurant serving Andalucian wines. Another great option is the Royal Hideaway Sancti Petri, an upscale resort with a 3-minute walk to the beach. This luxurious resort has everything a traveler could want, with gorgeous rooms, huge tropical gardens, a nightclub and bowling alley, health-conscious restaurants, and the largest spa in Andalucia.
