Overview

Located in the town of Smithfield in Isle of Wight County, Tylers Beach is a small but wide beige sand beach.  The beach is positioned in a sheltered inlet along the James River, which together provides incredible views.

Amenities

Tylers Beach does not have lifeguards or any other amenities except a boat launch and a few picnic tables, so plan your trip accordingly.

Activities

Tylers Beach offers several fun activities, including sunbathing, swimming, beachcombing, boating, and fishing.  If you are planning to go into the water, we recommend being careful, as water is known to have rocky bottoms.   The water near the beach is shallow, making it ideal for kayaks, canoes, and small boats.  If you enjoy fishing, you may catch bass, muskellunge, redbreast sunfish, rock bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and flathead catfish.  Tylers Beach is ideal for visitors looking for a tranquil beach experience, as this beach sees fewer visitors than other nearby beaches.  Dogs are allowed if they are on a leash, and it is open from sunrise until sunset.

Tylers Beach does not offer an access path for people with disabilities.

Getting to Tylers Beach is easy - the beach has a few street parking spots located at 15077 Tylers Beach Road, which is easily accessible via State Highway 686.

Attractions

There are many attractions near Tylers Beach.  Bacon's Castle - also known as Allen’s Brick House, is a historic house built in high Jacobean architecture positioned on the south bank of the James River that has now been transformed into a museum.  It was owned by Arthur Allen’s family and features 30 opulent rooms with two brick-thick walls, luxurious furnishings, and many art pieces.  Visitors can enjoy interesting guided tours that offer an intriguing insight into the history of the Allen family and 17th-century colonial life in Virginia.  Ripley's Believe It or Not! Williamsburg is a unique museum with a mirror maze, animal oddities, shrunken human heads, animal skeletons, pop-culture memorabilia, a 4D theater, mini golf, themed galleries, and stories about people and places that are hard to believe but are actually real.  Busch Gardens Williamsburg is a family-friendly amusement park that features many thrill rides, including roller coasters, the Slingshot, the Sky Fall, the Air Strike, bumper cars, sky rides, and many other rides for visitors of all ages.  Freedom Park is spread over 600 acres and offers many amenities, including paved paths, biking paths, interpretive signage, picnic areas, picnic tables, a playground, restrooms, a botanical garden, and picnic shelters.  In addition, the park hosts interesting events and educational programs throughout the year.   If you are looking for another nearby attraction, the Virginia Living Museum is home to more than 250 animal and plant species, including fish, reptiles, birds, amphibians, and mammals. It features an aquarium, a science museum, and a planetarium, which offer interesting interactive and petting sessions.

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants within a 14-minute drive of Tylers Beach.  Main Street Restaurant serves eggs, omelets, salads, steaks, sandwiches, burritos, ravioli, spaghetti, seafood, meat, and poultry dishes.  Taste of Smithfield Restaurant serves amazing soups, salads, tacos, nachos, sandwiches, burgers, seafood, meat, and poultry dishes.  Smithfield Station serves incredible seafood and pre-designed meals.  Q Daddy's Pitmaster BBQ serves meat, seafood, pork, beef, and poultry dishes.   If you are looking for another good and affordable nearby restaurant, Captain Chuck-A-Muck's serves salads, sandwiches, tacos, burgers, seafood, meat, and poultry dishes.

If you are looking for a hotel near Tylers Beach, there are many great options nearby.  If you are looking for an upscale hotel, the 5-Star The Jefferson Hotel is one hour and twenty-one minutes away by car and offers many amenities, including indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, a sauna, a fitness center, whirlpool tubs, and many restaurants.  A more affordable hotel is the 4-Star The Smithfield Inn, which has a few amenities, including gas fireplaces, a restaurant, and complimentary breakfast.  Another moderately priced option is the 4-Star Newport News Marriott at City Center, which has many amenities including an indoor pool, a fitness center, and a restaurant.  A more reasonably priced option is the riverfront 3-Star Smithfield Station, which offers many amenities including a seasonal outdoor pool, a fitness center, a library, a restaurant, and a complimentary breakfast.  If you are looking for another good and affordable nearby hotel, the beachfront 3-Star Hampton Inn & Suites Smithfield has many amenities including a heated pool, a fitness center, a 24/7 snack shop, coin-operated laundry facilities, and a complimentary breakfast.
