Buono Beach is a charming small shorefront public park located in Staten Island, New York, within the Rosebank neighborhood. It stretches approximately 500 feet along the New York Harbor and is adjacent to the historic Alice Austen House. The beach is known for its calm waters and beige sand, making it ideal for swimming and sunbathing. However, there are no lifeguards on duty, so swimming is at your own risk. The park offers amenities like bathroom access, picnic areas, and volleyball courts. Originally named Penny Beach, it was renamed in 1988 to honor Matthew 'Giggy' Buono, a local veteran who died in the Vietnam War. The park also features a veterans' memorial fountain.
The beach's calm atmosphere and scenic views make it a popular spot for relaxation and recreation. Visitors can enjoy the nearby Alice Austen House, which is maintained by the Historic House Trust, and explore the surrounding neighborhood for its historical significance.
Despite being damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012, the park reopened in 2016 after significant repairs, ensuring it remains a beautiful and tranquil destination for locals and visitors alike.
