Zetterberg Preserve at Point Betsie is a stunning natural area located near Frankfort, Michigan. It is renowned for its dynamic mosaic of shifting sand dunes and Lake Michigan shoreline, making it a unique and picturesque destination. The preserve was established in 1988 when Steve and Connie Zetterberg donated 71 acres of land, which has since expanded to 168 acres. It is part of one of the largest freshwater dune systems in the world, providing critical habitat for rare species like Pitcher's thistle and potential nesting sites for piping plovers.
The area offers breathtaking views and opportunities for birdwatching, especially during peak migration periods. Visitors can enjoy a 1.2-mile loop trail that includes shoreline and road segments, though there are no official foot trails within the preserve itself.
The preserve's diverse ecosystem includes open dunes, interdunal wetlands, and boreal forests, making it a fascinating spot for nature enthusiasts.
