Little Sandy Bottom Pond Beach is a charming and intimate beach located in Pembroke, Massachusetts. It features a 300-foot sandy shoreline, making it perfect for lounging and enjoying the sun. The pond itself is a 54-acre natural body of water with an average depth of 10 feet and a maximum depth of 20 feet, ideal for swimming, skating, and paddling. Historically, the area was once home to an amusement park called Mayflower Grove, which operated from 1901 to about 1940. Today, the beach offers a peaceful retreat for both residents and visitors.
The beach is part of the North River watershed and is classified as a Great Pond, meaning it is held in trust by the state for public use. It is not connected to other ponds via surface water flow, with most water leaving as groundwater recharge. The surrounding area is rich in history, having been inhabited by the Mattakeeset band of the Massachusett Native American tribe.
Visitors can enjoy activities like fishing, which includes species such as largemouth bass and chain pickerel, though fishing is not allowed in the beach area. The beach offers basic amenities like picnic tables and a fishing pier, but lacks lifeguards and extensive parking.
