Overview

Located in central Maui, Lower Paia Park - also called Lower Pāʻia Park - is a one-and-a-half-acre recreational park that has a narrow beach with light brown sand, many nearby trees, and a slightly sloping incline. This beach is named Lower Paia Park Beach and it is also called Lower Pāʻia Park Beach. 

Amenities

Although Lower Paia Park does not have lifeguards, it has many other amenities including basketball courts, restrooms, nearby pay-phones, showers, benches, drinking water facilities, and a large nearby grassy area. 

Activities

Lower Paia Park offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, wildlife watching, fishing, swimming, picnicking, basketball, swimming, kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing, kayaking, bodyboarding, bodysurfing, canoeing, paddleboarding, surf-skiing, jet-skiing, water-skiing, boating, and wakeboarding. The water near Lower Paia Park offers good surfing waves. If you are planning to swim or surf in the water near Lower Paia Park, we recommend being careful as the water here is known to have unpredictable rip currents and rogue waves. Depending on the time of the year, you can view many kinds of animals in the water near this beach including sea turtles and migrating whales. If you are planning to fish in the water near Lower Paia Park, we recommend ensuring compliance with the local fishing regulations - these regulations can be found at the website of the Division of Aquatic Resources (which is a part of the State of Hawai’i’s Department of Land and Natural Resources).

Parking

Getting to Lower Paia Park is easy - the beach is located along Hawaii Route 36, which is a part of Hana Highway (which is also called the Road To Hana). However, parking here can get difficult as the free parking lot near the park can often get overcrowded. While people earlier parked in street parking spaces along Hana Highway that was available near Lower Paia Park, these street parking spaces have now been officially removed and street parking is legally prohibited along the portions of the Hana Highway that are near the Lower Paia Park entrance. We recommend visiting Lower Paia Park early so that you can have the maximum chances of securing a spot at the park’s parking lot.

Attractions

There are many attractions near Lower Paia Park. Maui Nui Botanical Gardens is spread over seven acres and primarily exhibit and conserve Native Hawaiian plant varieties from the Maui Nui region (which consists of the islands of Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai, and Maui) – the gardens also have many plant species that were introduced by Polynesian settlers including 40 sugarcane species, 15 sweet potato varieties, and 20 varieties of taro. The gardens also have a greenhouse, a shade house, picnic tables, and playgrounds - the gardens’ premises also host many interesting events including docent-led tours and workshops. Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum offers interesting historical exhibits which offer a unique insight into the life of various people who worked in Maui’s sugar mills. The museum also offers insights into the growth of Maui’s sugar industry and it also has interesting equipment used in processing sugar including a cane hauler, a 1920s outdoor Portuguese oven, and an 1898 Nordberg steam engine. If you are looking for another attraction near Lower Paia Park, Ho’okipa Lookout (also called Ho’okipa Beach Lookout) is a cliff-top observation area that offers amazing Instagram-worthy views of the Pacific Ocean and the northern Maui shoreline.

Restaurants

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants near Lower Paia Park. Mama’s Fish House is an excellent upscale restaurant that serves amazing Polynesian-inspired dishes for lunch and dinner including soups, seafood, and beef dishes. The restaurant also has Polynesian-inspired decor. Another upscale restaurant is nyloS which offers delicious gourmet dishes prepared using modern gastronomic cooking techniques. Café des Amis is a restaurant that offers outstanding French, the Mediterranean, and Indian dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner including curries, crepes, Greek salad, and pita bread. If you are looking for another good and affordable restaurant near Lower Paia Park, Thai Spice Paia serves amazing Thai dishes including Thai curries, stir fry, pad see ew, and Khao pad. As another modestly priced option, Hana Picnic Lunch Co. primarily offers delicious bagels and sandwiches. 

Hotels

If you are looking for a hotel near Lower Paia Park, there are many great nearby options. The 5-Star Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort is a 35-minute drive away and offers many amenities including a fitness center, a spa with 40 treatment rooms and a fitness center, a kids’ club, nine pools, multiple restaurants, and a kid’s club. Another upscale hotel is The Inn at Mama’s Fish House which offers many amenities including a restaurant, a private beach area, and guest laundry facilities. A more affordable hotel is the 3-Star Paia Inn which offers many amenities including rental facilities for bikes, surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, complimentary breakfast, beach towels, mats, chairs, and boogie boards. The 3-Star Maui Seaside Hotel is another moderately priced hotel that offers many amenities including a restaurant offering Hawaiian cuisine, a pool, and guest laundry facilities. If you are looking for another good and affordable hotel near Lower Paia Park, Nalu Kai Lodge offers many amenities including a second story sundeck with ocean views, a courtyard that is enclosed by bamboo fences, a tiki bar, a barbecue area, a shower, a waterfall, and a coin-operated laundry.
