Overview

Located in the town of Mokulēia, Mokuleia Beach Park - also called Mokule'ia Beach Park - is a recreational park that has a long and narrow beach with light brown sand and many nearby trees, shrubs, grass, and a nearby reef.  This beach is also called Mokuleia Beach and a portion of this beach is named Army Beach, and it is located near an airfield namedKawaihapai Airfield which was formerly named Dillingham Airfield.  As an interesting fact, this park was the filming location for a portion of the TV series Lost.  The name of the park - Mokuleia - means “district of abundance” in Hawaiian.

Amenities

Although Mokuleia Beach Park does not have lifeguards, it has many other amenities including a nearby grassy area, restrooms, showers, and picnic areas.  Dogs are allowed on leash in Mokuleia Beach Park.

Activities

Mokuleia Beach Park offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, wildlife watching, picnicking, swimming, paddleboarding, surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, surf-skiing, jet-skiing, water-skiing, and boating.  The shallow water near Mokuleia Beach Park occasionally offers manageable waves, which make it ideal for beginner surfers during calm water conditions (particularly in summers).  In addition, many surfers visit Mokuleia Beach Park to surf at some popular surfing spots here including Park Rights and Day Star, which is located near the western part of the park.  Snorkelers also visit Mokuleia Beach Park during calm water conditions and explore the marine biodiversity around the nearby reefs.  Depending on the time of the year, you can see many kinds of animals near Mokuleia Beach Park including sea turtles, migrating whales between December and May, and rare Hawaiian monk seals, along with many varieties of fish and small crabs.  It is important to note that sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals are protected under a law named theEndangered Species Act of 1973, and harming them can lead to a fine of up to $50,000 and possible imprisonment.

In addition to snorkeling, Mokuleia Beach Park is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers, particularly during winters.  The best time to kitesurf and windsurf near Mokuleia Beach Park is when the Kona winds are blowing in winters - these winds blow in from the south.  If you are planning to surf, swim, or snorkel near Mokuleia Beach Park, we recommend being careful because the water here is known to frequently have unpredictable and hazardous rip currents and extremely dangerous waves, particularly during winters - if you are a beginner swimmer, we recommend that you forego water activities here during winters.  In addition, the rugged reef near Mokuleia Beach Park can also make water activities difficult.  Mokuleia Beach Park is ideal for visitors looking for a quieter beach experience because this beach sees fewer visitors than other nearby north Oahu beaches.  This beach is also popular with spearfishers during calm water conditions - if you are planning to fish near Mokuleia Beach Park, please ensure compliance with the local fishing regulations which can be found at the website of theDivision of Aquatic Resources (which is a part of the State of Hawaii’sDepartment of Land and Natural Resources).  If you like taking pictures and beautiful views, Mokuleia Beach Park offers amazing Instagram-worthy views of the northern Oahu shoreline and the Pacific Ocean.  In addition, you can also see many aircraft and skydivers around the beach due to the nearby Kawaihapai Airfield, which is often the take-off point for skydivers
