Oneuli Beach, also known as Naupaka Beach, is a stunning black sand beach located on the Wailea side of the Pu'u Ola'i cinder cone in Maui, Hawaii. This beach is part of Makena State Park and offers breathtaking views of volcanic landscapes and unique geological formations. The sand is made from ground lava, providing a striking contrast to the typical white sand beaches. It is an excellent spot for snorkeling and diving due to its coral reefs and abundant sea life, including green sea turtles. However, it is not ideal for casual swimming due to the abrupt transition from sand to hard lava rock at the water's edge.
The beach is relatively secluded, making it a peaceful retreat from more crowded areas. Local fishermen frequent the area, adding to its charm. Visitors can enjoy the scenic views and explore nearby trails, such as the one leading to the top of the cinder cone for panoramic views.
Despite its natural beauty, Oneuli Beach lacks facilities like restrooms and showers, except for a single porta potty. It is accessible via a dirt road, which may require attention while driving.
