Overview

Located in the county of Honolulu, Hickam Harbor Beach - also known as Hickam Beach - is a small beach that has light brown sand, many nearby palm trees, a sloping incline, and a rocky southern end.  This beach is a part of a United States Armed Forces military base named Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam - this base is partly named after Horace Meek Hickam, a military aviation pioneer who was killed during a practice flight in 1934. 

Amenities

Hickam Beach has lifeguards on weekends and has many other amenities including restrooms, showers, beach equipment rentals, and pavilions.  Dogs are not allowed at Hickam Harbor Beach. 

Activities

Hickam Harbor Beach offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, wildlife watching, volleyball, picnicking, swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, canoeing, fishing, paddleboarding, jet-skiing, surf-skiing, boating, and water-skiing.  The water near Hickam Harbor Beach is calm and clear, making it ideal for beginner swimmers.  If you are planning to swim in the water near Hickam Harbor Beach, we recommend being careful as the water here is known to have unpredictable rip currents. In addition, the water here is also known to have high levels of inorganic contaminants.  Depending on the time of the year, you can view many kinds of animals in the water near Hickam Harbor Beach including migrating whales and sea turtles.  If you are planning to fish in the water near Hickam Harbor Beach, we recommend following the local fishing regulations.

Parking

Getting to Hickam Harbor Beach is easy - the beach is located near 3455 Mamala Bay Drive, where a parking lot is also present nearby.  However, it is important to note that access to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is only usually available to authorized military personnel only and not to the general public.

Attractions

There are many attractions near Hickam Harbor Beach.  The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum (which is also known as the Bishop Museum and the Hawaiʻi State Museum of Natural and Cultural History) is one of the largest museums in Hawaii and it has one of Hawaii’s largest collections of cultural history artifacts and natural history specimens.  The museum also has a planetarium, which offers a unique insight into how sailors used to navigate through the Pacific Ocean with the help of stars and it also has the Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center, which has interactive and fun exhibits for kids.   Freedom Tower is a 171-feet high water tower that has Moorish architectural influences and was built in the late 1930s.  This tower was officially named Freedom Tower in 1985 in honor of those who have served or intend to serve for the cause of freedom and those who have paid the ultimate price in their fight for liberty - in addition, this tower is beautifully decorated for Christmas every year.  Mamala Bay Golf Course is an 18-hole golf course that offers an amazing Instagram-worthy view of the Pacific Ocean and a nearby volcanic crater Diamond Head.  The course also offers golf equipment rental facilities and golf lessons and clinics.  If you are looking for another attraction near Hickam Harbor Beach, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial pays tribute to the brave Americans who perished during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.  The National Park Service managed site’s most prominent memorial is the USS Arizona Memorial. This memorial has the remains of USS Arizona, which is the final resting place of 1,177 sailors who perished during the attack.  Pearl Harbor National Memorial also has exhibits on the Pacific front of World War Two, a screening theater showing movies about the attack on Pearl Harbor, a bookstore, and memorial sculptures.

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants near Hickam Harbor Beach.  Mitch’s Fish Market & Sushi Bar offers amazing sushi, along with other amazing Japanese dishes including hamachikama, bento, and sashimi.  The Lanai at Mamala Bay is a waterfront restaurant that offers delicious pastas, poultry dishes, seafood, pork dishes, steaks, burgers, salads, and sandwiches.  If you are looking for another good and affordable restaurant near Hickam Harbor Beach, Jagger's Cafe Pearl Harbor offers outstanding dishes for lunch and dinner including bagels, sandwiches, burgers, and wraps.
