Located on the west coast of Auckland, New Zealand, Karekare Beach is a small black sand beach with many rocky portions.  The black sand of Karekare Beach is due to the presence of high iron content that comes from the volcanic activities in the region.  This beach is positioned near the famous Piha Beach and Muriwai Beach and has a spectacular backdrop of the Waitakere Ranges, lush forests, and rugged cliffs, creating a picturesque setting along the Tasman Sea.  Also, there is a small stream that drains into the sea near the beach, creating a beautiful contrast with the dark sand.  Karekare Beach is part of the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park and is promoted as an ecotourism destination, encouraging sustainable tourism practices to preserve the natural beauty and diverse marine life of the region.

If you get hungry, there are a few restaurants near Karekare Beach.  Surfside Bites & Brew is present near the beach and serves incredible salads, nachos, burgers, seafood, meat, pork, and poultry dishes.  Aryeh serves incredible seafood, meat, pork, and poultry dishes.  The Attic Bar & Restaurant serves delicious salads, pizzas, burgers, meat, seafood, and poultry dishes.  Bricklane Restaurant & Bar serves seafood, meat, and poultry dishes.  If you are looking for another nearby attraction, La Porchetta Restaurant Henderson serves amazing Italian dishes.

If you are looking for Karekare Beach accommodation, there are many great options nearby.  If you are looking for an upscale hotel, the 4-Star Waitakere Resort & Spa is 20 minutes away by car and offers many amenities, including an outdoor pool, a sauna, a spa, a hot tub, a fitness center, an open fireplace, a library, and a restaurant.   A more affordable hotel is the 4-Star Quality Hotel Lincoln Green, which offers many amenities, including comfortable rooms, a restaurant, and a patio.  Another moderately priced option is the 3-Star Piha Beachstay Accommodation, which has several amenities, including comfortable rooms and picnic tables.  A more reasonably priced option is the 3-Star Solsen Motel, which has a few amenities, including comfortable rooms and a kitchen in some rooms.  If you are looking for another affordable hotel, New Haven Motel has an outdoor pool, a fitness center, a hot tub, and a barbecue grill area.

Karekare Beach, West Auckland has several amenities, including seasonal lifeguards, restrooms, hiking trails, a life-saving club, a few restaurants and hotels.

Karekare Beach offers many fun activities, including swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing, hiking, surfing, fishing, picnicking, bodyboarding, paddleboarding, and photography.  If you plan to go into the water, swimming is allowed, but we recommend staying between the flags and being careful, as water is known to have strong swells and unpredictable strong rip currents.  If you enjoy surfing, the beach is known for its consistently strong waves, which makes it an ideal spot to go surfing for experienced surfers.  Hikers can enjoy the nearby Mercer Bay Loop Track or Comans Track, which offer unique insights into the local biodiversity.  In addition, hikers can explore the nearby Opal Pool Stream and Karekare Waterfall, located just a short walk from the beach, which is one of the most photographed waterfalls in the region. There are tide pools present around the beach that are rich with marine life, providing an excellent spot for exploration.  If you enjoy camping, you can book a campsite at the nearby McCreadies Paddock Campground, which offers an amazing camping experience.  Karekare Beach is a perfect blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities, but it is less crowded than nearby Piha Beach, making it a peaceful escape for nature lovers.  If you enjoy photography, there are many points near the beach known for taking the best beach photos.  Dogs are allowed if they are on a leash, and the beach is open from sunrise until sunset.

Karekare Beach, New Zealand, does not offer an access path for people with disabilities.

Getting to Karekare Beach is easy - the beach has a small parking lot at 1 Karekare Road, Karekare 0772, New Zealand, near Karekare Beach Lodge, which provides easy access to the beach.

The beach's name, “Karekare,” means "rippling or choppy waters" in Maori. This beach holds cultural importance to the Maori people, who have lived in the region for centuries and used Karekare as a settlement and fishing area.  Interestingly, the rough waters and strong currents have caused several shipwrecks along the coast.

Also, this beach has been featured in several national and international films, music videos, and advertisements, including the Oscar-winning film "The Piano," due to its dramatic scenery.

There are many attractions near Karekare Beach.  Karekare Falls is a 30-meter-high waterfall positioned within New Zealand’s Waitakere Ranges that cascades down a rocky cliff into a picturesque pool where visitors can take a refreshing dip.  Visitors can access this waterfall via an easy hiking trail that winds through lush native bushes, which offers a tranquil escape into nature.  Waitakere Ranges Regional Park is spread over 16,000 hectares and is home to lush native rainforest, rugged coastlines, waterfalls, numerous hiking trails, and volcanic rock formations.  The park is a haven for hikers, nature lovers, and adventure seekers who want to experience the wild and natural beauty of Auckland’s west coast.  Mercer Bay Loop Walk is a one-mile-long, moderately challenging, breathtaking coastal trail in Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, offering some of the most spectacular cliff-top views of Auckland’s rugged west coast, nearby beaches, and the Tasman Sea.

Cascade Kauri is a prominent native forest area located in the Waitakere Ranges, known for its rich natural beauty and ancient Kauri trees, which are among the largest and most iconic trees in New Zealand.  It is home to several mature Kauri trees, which are over 2,500 years old.  In addition, it also features a waterfall, popularly known as Cascade Falls, offering a serene and picturesque setting surrounded by lush forest.   If you are looking for another nearby attraction, Taitomo Island is a small, uninhabited island located off the coast of Piha Beach, which is home to the famous Taitomo Rock, a prominent, jagged, natural volcanic rock formation rising from the sea that has been shaped by years of erosion, making it an impressive sight along the Piha coastline.  It is considered a landmark of spiritual and historical importance for the indigenous people of the region.
