Located in Palermo’s district of Mondello, Mondello Beach – also called Spiaggia di Mondello and Monte Gallo Beach – is a popular, curve-shaped, and one-and-a-half kilometers-long beach with white sand, nearby oceanfront historic villas, and two nearby oceanfront cliffs in northwestern Sicily.

Many print and digital publications including the Conde Nast Traveller, Lonely Planet, and Urban List have listed this beautiful beach as one of the best beaches in Sicily.  In addition, Cosmopolitan has featured this beach in its article “Beach holidays in Italy don't get dreamier than these beauty spots.”  This beach is also a favorite of Randall Kaplan, the world’s foremost beach expert who is known as Mr. Beach.

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants near Mondello Beach.  Alle Terrazze is an upscale restaurant that is set within an elegant Art Nouveau-style building on the beach – it offers a variety of amazing gourmet dishes for lunch and dinner including pasta, seafood, salads, and risotto.  Trattoria da Piero offers a variety of delicious Italian-style seafood and pasta, along with other dishes including salads, risotto, and couscous.  D2 Daniels offers excellent dishes including pasta, pizza, American-style burgers, steak, pulled pork, and soup.  Another great restaurant is Mida Lounge Bar that offers many amazing Italian and Sicilian dishes, along with a variety of refreshing alcoholic drinks.  Bar Pasticceria Alba offers many great dishes including pizza, seafood, calzone, and pasta – it also offers many Italian desserts.  If you are looking for another good and affordable nearby restaurant, Touring Cafe Beach is a restaurant that offers excellent local authentic Sicilian cuisine and Italian-style dishes including pasta, arancini, sandwiches, and ravioli – it also offers refreshing desserts, along with amazing alcoholic beverages and soft drinks.

If you are looking for hotels in Mondello Beach Sicily, there are many great nearby options.  The 4-Star Splendid Hotel la Torre offers many amenities including multiple pools, a sundeck, a terrace, a garden, a bar, a fitness center, and a restaurant.  The 4-Star Unìco Boutique Hotel d'Arte that offers many amenities including a bar, an art gallery, a garden, an infinity pool, a normal pool, a hot tub, and complimentary breakfast.  Another great hotel is the Domia Boutique Hotel that offers many amenities including a restaurant, a pool, a bar, a garden, and complimentary breakfast.  A more affordable hotel is the 3-Star Al Baglio that offers many amenities including a courtyard, a terrace, bike loaner facilities, and a fitness room.  If you are looking for another good and affordable nearby hotel, the 3-Star Hotel Conchiglia D’Oro offers many amenities including a pool, a restaurant, a lounge, and a garden. Another great accommodation option is Mondello Beach Rooms by the Sea.

Mondello Beach has many amenities including lifeguards, a few public restrooms, a promenade, and a few nearby beach vendors selling snacks, street food, and ice cream.  In addition, there are private beach clubs here that are mostly active during summers – these Mondello beach club areas offer many amenities for a fee including access to restrooms, showers, and sun loungers and beach umbrellas.  If you want to use the facilities of the local beach clubs, you need to pay a fee of approximately €30.  In addition, rental facilities for boats and water sports equipment are also available nearby.

Mondello Beach offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, swimming, fishing, boating, surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, skimboarding, boogie boarding, bodysurfing, surf-skiing, jet-skiing, water-skiing, paddleboarding, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, and wildlife watching.

This beach is ideal for swimmers with slightly less experience because the crystal clear waters here usually offer manageable waves.  In addition, this beach is also popular with surfers and windsurfers.  There are many boat rental concessions near the beach – you can visit these concessions and book a fun boat tour of the Mondello Bay.

If you plan to swim, kayak, or snorkel here, we recommend being careful because the water here is known to have unpredictable rip currents and dangerous waves.  In addition, the water here is also sometimes known to have a lot of algae.

If you like taking pictures with beautiful views, Mondello Beach Palermo offers an Instagram-worthy and breathtaking view of the Palermo shoreline, the nearby Monte Pellegrino, and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

In addition, this beach and the area near it also offer many fun events including the World Festival on the Beach and the Mondello Water Festival.  You can also explore the district of Mondello’s central part that is located near the beach – this portion also offers many interesting historic buildings, shopping stores, and restaurants.

Mondello Beach has a few wheelchair friendly pathways for disabled visitors.

Getting to Mondello Beach is easy – this beach is easily accessible from Palermo’s city center through a local highway named Strada Statale 113.  There are multiple free and paid street parking spaces near the beach – please note that the paid street parking spaces here charge around €1 per hour for parking.  The free street parking spaces have white lines around them, while the paid ones are marked by blue lines.

If you want to travel by public transport, you can take the bus number 806 which travels from Palermo’s Piazza Crispi to Mondello.  You can easily walk to the beach after getting off Mondello’s bus stop – if you want to travel through bus number 806, you can visit the Italian-language website of the transport organization AMAT Palermo for more information.  Please note that bus service to Mondello is relatively less during winters.

We recommend visiting this beach early during the peak season of summer because it can get crowded quickly, especially during the months of July and August.  In addition, we also recommend avoiding visiting this beach in winters because the weather is very chilly here.

The name of the beach and the district – Mondello – is apparently derived from the Arabic language.  This linguistic influence is because of Sicily being ruled by the Arabs between the 9th and the eleventh centuries.  In addition, this beach also has a beautiful large building named the Antico Stabilimento Balneare – this iconic building was built in 1912, has Liberty-style Art Nouveau architecture, and it currently houses a restaurant.

There are many attractions near Mondello Beach within a 20-minute drive.  Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele – also called Teatro Massimo – is a beautiful and iconic opera house/theater that was opened in 1897 and it hosts many interesting musical and theatrical performances including operas, ballets, and musical concerts.  You can also explore this opera house through guided tours, and it was also featured in the Godfather III.  Capo Gallo Lighthouse – also called Faro di Capo Gallo and Il Faro – is a 40-meter tall dilapidated lighthouse that was built in 1854.  This lighthouse offers some amazing photos – the area around this lighthouse also offers Instagram-worthy views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and there is also an oceanfront promenade nearby.  Porticciolo di Mondello – also called Porto di Mondello – is a marina that offers many fun watersports including boating, paddleboarding, and kayaking.  It also offers many interesting nearby restaurants and shopping stores, and the area near it also hosts fun local festivals.  Capo Gallo Nature Reserve is a 586-acre coastal nature reserve that offers many amazing things to explore including an old lighthouse, a pine forest, waterfront cliffs, and rocky caves – the caves here have interesting historic and prehistoric inscriptions, carvings, and drawings.  This nature reserve also offers many fun activities including hiking, sunbathing, wildlife watching, kayaking, and swimming.  Palazzina Cinese – also called Real Casina alla Cinese and the “Chinese Palace” – is a beautiful palace that was built in 1806 and had Chinese-inspired architectural influences and it also served the residence of the members of the House of Savoy.  This palace also has beautiful gardens and one of its guest houses also contains a museum named Sicilian Ethnographic Museum Giuseppe Pitre.  If you are looking for another attraction near the beach, the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia – also called Santuario di Santa Rosalia – is a popular church that is 25 minutes away by car and was built around 1625.  It is dedicated to a Christian saint named Rosalia and its premises also have a cave - this church is a popular pilgrimage site and it also has a small museum.
