Located near the town of Ugento, Spiaggia di Torre San Giovanni – also called Torre San Giovanni Beach and Beach Torre San Giovanni – is a beach with light brown sand and rocky parts in the province of Lecce. This beach is located in the Italian region of Apulia and it is a part of a natural park named Litorale di Ugento Regional Nature Park. This beach is divided into two parts by a lighthouse named Torre San Giovanni di Ugento Lighthouse – the northern part of the beach is mostly rocky, while the southern part of this beach is mostly sandy.

This partially sandy beach has also been awarded the Blue Flag because of its cleanliness. In addition, New York Times also featured it in its article titled ‘There’s Something in the Air’ in Italy’s Salento.

Spiaggia di Torre San Giovanni Ugento has lifeguards on a seasonal basis. In addition to lifeguards, there are beach clubs here that offer access to a few popular amenities including access to restrooms, and beach chair, beach umbrella, and sun bed rentals Torre San Giovanni.

In addition, the area around this beach also offers a couple of other public amenities including a boardwalk and multiple playgrounds.

This beach is ideal for beginner swimmers because the crystal-clear and shallow water here usually has gentle waves. In addition, snorkelers and scuba divers also visit here to explore the vibrant underwater landscape that includes shipwrecks and corals. 

If you plan to swim, kayak, or canoe here, we recommend being careful because the water here is known to have unpredictable rip currents and dangerous waves – the water here can be turbulent when the southern winds are blowing here. 

If you like taking pictures with excellent views, Spiaggia di Torre San Giovanni offers amazing Instagram-worthy views of the Apulian shoreline, a nearby islet named Isola di Pazze, and the Ionian Sea, particularly at sunset. This beach is ideal for visitors looking for a quieter ambiance because it sees fewer visitors as compared to other nearby beaches.

Spiaggia di Torre San Giovanni does not offer wheelchair access to visitors with disabilities.

Getting to Spiaggia di Torre San Giovanni is easy – this beach is easily accessible from the nearby town of Ugento through a local road named Strada Provinciale 65. The northern part of the beach is also easily accessible through another local road named Strada Provinciale 88.

There are free street parking spaces near the beach, along with multiple nearby free and paid parking lots – the paid parking lots here cost around €6 per day. 

We recommend visiting this beach early between the months of July and August because it can sometimes get crowded. We also recommend checking the Meteo Torre San Giovanni weather reports because the beach can get significantly windy sometimes.

The beach is known to have a festive ambiance in the evenings and it hosts many fun parties and musical concerts – in addition, the area near this beach also hosts many fun events including the Festa dell’Emigrante (Emigrant’s Festival) that is held in the first week of August and the local Christmas celebrations in the winter.

There are many attractions near Spiaggia di Torre San Giovanni.  Torre San Giovanni di Ugento Lighthouse is a popular 22 meters-tall octagon-shaped lighthouse that was originally built as an observation tower in 1565. It has a unique black-and-white checkered paint and it offers a unique insight into local history. If you like kart-racing, Pista Salentina is a go-kart track that offers an exciting go-karting experience – it also has a restaurant and a pool. Lungomare di Torre San Giovanni is an oceanfront walkway that offers a fun oceanfront walking experience, along with excellent views of the Ionian Sea. Chiesa Madonna del Casale is a historic church that was built in the Medieval era and it has beautiful frescoes, along with a relaxing ambiance. If you are looking for another attraction near the beach, Chiesa Santa Maria di Constantinopoli is a 15-minute drive away and it was built in the early 17th century – this church has beautiful religious art and it was dedicated to the Madonna of Constantinople, which is a version of the Virgin Mary. 

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants near Spiaggia di Torre San Giovanni. Friggitoria Del Porto is a seasonal restaurant that is from April to September and is known for serving great fried seafood. Trattoria Lu Pescatore is a waterfront restaurant that offers excellent Italian-style gourmet dishes including pasta, seafood, pizza, fried zucchini and eggplant, and steak.  Rivadamare is an oceanfront restaurant and it offers traditional Italian-style dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner – it is also known to have an extensive seafood menu.  Pasticceria Martinucci Torre San Giovanni is known for serving delicious Italian-inspired baked desserts, and it also offers many savory dishes including sandwiches and prosciutto. If you are looking for another good and affordable nearby restaurant, Bojo Fish/Burger serves amazing burgers, along with a variety of other dishes including fried seafood, French fries, and sandwiches. Another great restaurant near the beach is Pattio – Torre San Giovanni that offers amazing snacks including pizzas, burgers, and French fries, along with excellent desserts and beverages.
