Mavrovouni Beach

Located in eastern Peloponnese and near the village of Mavrovouni, Mavrovouni Beach – also known as Paralia Mavrovouniou – is a five-kilometer-long and popular beach with coarse light brown sand and a nearby pebbly seafloor.  Mavrovouni Beach has been awarded a Blue Flag for its cleanliness. 

Mavrovouni Beach offers many amenities including lifeguards, volleyball courts, showers, restrooms, changing rooms, and rental facilities for sunbeds, water sports equipment, and beach umbrellas.

Mavrovouni Beach offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, wildlife watching, fishing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, bodyboarding, jet-skiing, surf-skiing, water-skiing, surfing, parasailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, paddleboarding, wakeboarding, snorkeling, and scuba diving.  Mavrovouni Beach is ideal for beginner swimmers, kayakers, canoers, paddleboarders, and snorkelers because the water here usually has gentle waves and is usually clear – the water here is particularly clear in the mornings.  Mavrovouni Beach is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers because the beach has strong winds, particularly during summer afternoons between June and August.

If you are planning to swim, surf, kayak, canoe, snorkel, or paddleboard near Mavrovouni Beach, we recommend being careful because this beach is known to have unpredictable rip currents and dangerous waves, particularly during afternoons.

Mavrovouni Beach is also a great site for birdwatching and you can see many kinds of birds here.

Getting to Mavrovouni Beach is easy – this beach is easily accessible from Greek National Road 39 and from the nearby town of Gythio.  There are multiple free street parking spaces near the beach.  We recommend visiting this beach early during the summer because it can get slightly crowded.

Mavrovouni Beach is used as a seasonal nesting site by the endangered loggerhead sea turtles.

There are many attractions near Mavrovouni Beach.  The Lighthouse of Gythio is a 25 meters tall lighthouse that was built in the 19th century – the lighthouse’s premises have a museum that contains interesting exhibitions on the nautical and maritime history of the Mani peninsula.  Cultural Center of East Mani – also called the Center of Information and Interpretation of Eastern Mani – has interesting exhibitions on the culture and history of the eastern Mani peninsula.  This museum also has exhibits on locally-produced products and local industries.  The shipwreck of a 67-meter-long ship named Dimitrios is also a famous attraction – this shipwreck offers amazing Instagram-worthy photos and is popular with photographers.  If you are looking for another attraction near Mavrovouni Beach, Historical and Ethnological Museum of Mani is a museum that is set in a 19th century building and it offers many interesting exhibits on local history – the museum’s collection includes many interesting items including antiques, artworks, maps, and manuscripts.

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants near Mavrovouni Beach.  Hannover Restaurant has a garden and it serves amazing Fusion cuisine with Greek and International culinary influences including steaks, Japanese dishes, pastas, pork dishes, and seafood.  Saga Fish Restaurant is known for serving amazing seafood including octopus, fish soup, and grilled seafood.  I Trata is a popular restaurant that serves amazing Greek cuisine and it is particularly known for serving outstanding Greek-style seafood.  Three are Singing and Two are Dancing is a restaurant that serves a variety of excellent Greek cuisine including moussaka, souvlaki, Greek-style seafood, and dolmades.  If you are looking for another good and affordable restaurant near Mavrovouni Beach, Kyra Matoula – also called Taverna Kyra Matoula – offers a variety of delicious barbecued dishes including lamb chops, bifteki, pork chops, and grilled chicken, along with a variety of other dishes including seafood, breakfast dishes, and salads.
