Fokos Beach

Located on the northeastern coast of Mykonos, Fokos Beach is a small but wide golden sand pebbly beach with many rocky portions.  The beach is positioned near an artificial freshwater lake popularly known as Techniti Limni Fragmatos Ano Meras in a sheltered cove and has a beautiful backdrop of rugged cliffs, little vegetation, and a few oceanfront homes, which together provide Instagram-worthy views along the Aegean Sea.

Fokos Beach, Mykonos, does not have lifeguards or any other amenities except a small traditional taverna, so plan your trip accordingly.

Fokos Beach, Greece, offers many fun activities, including swimming, sunbathing, hiking, snorkeling, watching wildlife, horseback riding, and photography.  If you plan to go into the water, waves are usually calm, making it a safe area to swim, but we recommend being careful as water is known to have unpredictable rip currents.  The clear waters around the beach are ideal for snorkeling, allowing visitors to explore the rich marine life.  If you enjoy surfing, the beach is known for its frequent windy weather.  Hikers can enjoy the nearby trails, which offer unique insights into the local biodiversity.  Fokos Beach is often considered an unofficial nude beach.  It is an ideal spot for those looking for a quiet and picturesque escape while exploring Mykonos coastline.  Dogs are not allowed on the beach, which is open from sunrise until sunset.

This beach is often referred to as “The Queen of Peace” due to its secluded atmosphere, ideal for visitors looking for peace and solitude.

There are many attractions near Fokos Beach.  Armenistis Lighthouse, a 19-meter-tall lighthouse located on the northwestern tip of Mykonos, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and nearby islands.  It was built in 1891 to guide ships safely around the island’s treacherous coastline.  Monastery of Tourliani is a 16th-century Greek Orthodox monastery located in the village of Ano Mera, dedicated to the Virgin Mary.  The monastery features beautiful Cycladic architecture, with an impressive bell tower, a gold-plated altar, Byzantine icons, and a peaceful courtyard, surrounded by lush gardens and a small fountain.  It also has a small museum showcasing interesting artifacts, relics, vestments, and items of historical significance related to the Orthodox faith and Mykonos’ religious history. 

Ano Mera is a small, picturesque inland village known for its tranquil atmosphere, whitewashed houses, narrow cobblestone streets, a 16th-century monastery, local markets, bakeries, and traditional Greek tavernas offering fresh seafood, where visitors can indulge in its authentic Cycladic charm and slower pace of life.  Gyzi Castle is the ruins of a medieval fortress built by the Gyzi family, a Venetian noble family that ruled the island during the late 14th century.  The castle played a significant role in the defense of Mykonos during the Venetian rule, offering protection for the local population against pirates and foreign invaders.  The castle is located on a hill, offering panoramic views of the island and the Aegean Sea.  If you are looking for another nearby attraction, The Mykonos Folklore Museum is housed in an old 18th-century Cycladic-style mansion that features a collection of artifacts, artwork, antique furniture, vintage tools, ceramics, musical instruments, and traditional Mykonian clothing, offering visitors a glimpse into the traditional life of Mykonos.  It also exhibits old maps, nautical instruments, and ship models, which highlights Mykonos’ maritime history of the island.
