Located near the eastern part of Havana, Playa Megano – also called Playa Santa Maria el Megano – is a beach with light brown sand.  This beach is a part of a group of beaches around eastern Havana called the Playa del Este – other beaches that are a part of Playa del Este include Playa Megano, Playa Marazul, Santa Maria Del Mar, and Playa Guanabo.  Playa Megano should not be confused with another separate Cuban beach with a similar name – this beach is also called Playa Megano and it is located on an island named Cayo Ensenachos.  The other Playa Megano in Cayo Ensenachos Cuba is located near an upscale hotel named Iberostar Selection Ensenachos.

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants near Playa Megano.  Restaurante Mi Casita de Coral – also called Mi Casita de Coral Restaurantes – offers a variety of delicious dishes with local influences including seafood, pasta, and chicken dishes.  Restaurante 421 is a restaurant that offers a variety of delicious dishes including pizza, ceviches, pasta, pizzas, fries, soups, and fried malanga.  Ajiaco Cafe has a homely ambiance and it also has a garden – the restaurant offers many excellent local and Latin American regional dishes including seafood, stewed beef, grilled meat, and rice-and-beans.  Restaurante Taramar is known for serving excellent local seafood dishes including lobster and paella, along with a variety of other local dishes including enchiladas, ropa vieja, and pechinga de pollo.  If you are looking for another good and affordable nearby restaurant, Ranchon Don Pepe offers excellent local seafood and live music.

Although Playa Megano Cuba has a lifeguard tower, please note that lifeguard deployment here may not be permanent.  In addition to lifeguards, the beach and the area around it have rental facilities for water sports equipment, sun loungers, beach chairs, and beach umbrellas.

Please note that there are no public restrooms here – if you are a customer at one of the local restaurants, you may be able to use their restrooms.

Playa el Megano offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, picnicking, swimming, fishing, paddleboarding, boating, jet-skiing, surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, parasailing, water-skiing, scuba diving, surf-skiing, snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, and wildlife watching.

This beach is ideal for beginner swimmers because the clear water here is known to have manageable waves.  In addition, slightly expert visitors also visit this beach in winter because the beach sometimes offers fun surfing waves.

If you plan to swim, kayak, or canoe here, we recommend being careful because the water here has unpredictable rip currents.  In addition, the seabed here is also known to have a considerable amount of trash, which can make water activities difficult.  Jellyfish are also known to live here, and they can cause painful stings if disturbed.

Playa Megano does not offer wheelchair access to visitors with disabilities, so please plan accordingly.

Getting to Playa Megano is easy – from Havana’s city center, you need to drive west on a highway named Via Blanca.  From Via Blanca, you need to turn right towards an unnamed road that will lead you to the western end of Avenida Aventura.  There is a free parking lot here – once you park here, you can easily walk to the beach.

If you are planning to travel by bus, a public bus named T3 has a stop near the beach – you can take the bus from the bus terminal near Havana’s Parque Central.

We recommend visiting this beach early between May and October because this beach can get significantly crowded during this time.

If you like taking pictures with beautiful views, Playa Megano Beach offers amazing Instagram-worthy views of the western Cuban shoreline and the Caribbean Sea.

There are many great attractions near Playa Megano in the “Old Havana” area within a 26-minute-drive.  Basilica of San Francisco de Asis is a Franciscan convent that was built in the Baroque style in the late 16th century.  This convent also has a concert hall, a garden dedicated to Mother Teresa, and the Museum of Religious Art – this museum also offers interesting religious artwork and antiques.  Plaza de San Francisco de Asis is a public square that is named after a nearby Franciscan church – this square has many interesting nearby historic buildings and landmarks including the Fountain of the Lions, the Sierra Maestra Terminal, and a statue named Caballero de Paris.  It also has many interesting restaurants.  Castillo de los Tres Reyes Del Morro – also called Castle of the Three Kings of Morro – is a castle that was constructed between 1589 and 1640.  It was designed by Italian architect Giovanni Battista Antonelli and it has a museum and a lighthouse – it also offers amazing views of the Caribbean Sea.  Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabana – also called La Cabana – is a fortress-complex that was built in the late 18th century – it has many interesting historic exhibits, restaurants, and souvenir shops and it also hosts interesting historical re-enactments and guided tours. If you are looking for another attraction near the beach, Parque Central – also called the Central Park of Havana – is a recreational area that has the statue of Cuban revolutionary Jose Marti and it also has 28 palm trees – Parque Central has a relaxing and hip ambiance.
