Black Sand Beach

Located in Matapalo, Costa Rica, Black Sand Beach gets its name from the stunning black sand that lines the shore.

Black Sand Beach has a few amenities available, including bathroom access and a few nearby restaurants. However, there are no lifeguards on duty, and dogs are not allowed on the beach.

The beach stretches approximately 1.5 kilometers and is perfect for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing.

There is a small parking lot near Black Sand Beach, which is free to use for visitors. However, space can be limited, so it's best to arrive early to ensure a spot. There is also the option to park on the side of the road near the beach.

Fun fact: The black sand found at Black Sand Beach is a result of the nearby Arenal Volcano, which has erupted several times in the past and spewed ash and lava into the air. The sand formed from the volcanic rock and ash fragments.

Aside from swimming and surfing, Black Sand Beach also offers some great hiking trails nearby, including the El Salto waterfall trail and the Nauyaca waterfall trail. Additionally, there are several opportunities for wildlife viewing, including the chance to spot monkeys, sloths, and exotic birds.

There are a few restaurants near Black Sand Beach that serve up delicious Costa Rican cuisine, including Las Olas Restaurant and La Caja de Langosta. Both offer fresh seafood dishes and other local favorites.
