Overview

Located in the suburb of Newport in Northern Sydney, Newport Beach is a popular 1.3 kilometers long, curve-shaped, and east-facing beach with golden sand and a 1 kilometer long nearby sandstone reef.

Amenities

Newport Beach has lifeguards usually every day from 9 am to 5 pm between the end of September till the end of April.  In addition to lifeguards, this beach and the area near it offer many other amenities including restrooms, showers, picnic areas, observation areas, changing rooms, barbecue areas, and a playground.

Activities

Newport Beach offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, fishing, swimming, scuba diving, paddleboarding, boating, water-skiing, jet-skiing, surfing, bodysurfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, parasailing, skimboarding, wakeboarding, bodyboarding, kayaking, canoeing, surf-skiing, and wildlife watching. 

This beach is ideal for surfers because the water here offers fun surfing waves – there is a surfing site near the northern end of the beach named Newport Peak that is particularly popular with surfers.  In addition, expert surfers also visit the southern end of this beach, which offers thrilling and large surfing waves.  The best time to surf here is when the northeasterly winds are blowing.  You can check the Newport Beach surf cam that is available online to see the amazing waves here. 

If you are planning to swim, kayak, canoe, surf, or scuba dive here, we recommend being careful because the water here can have unpredictable rip currents and dangerous waves.  There is storm drain near the beach, and after it rains, the water here can occasionally become polluted with high amounts of microbial contamination.  If you want to swim in calmer and cleaner water conditions, there is a rocky saltwater swimming pool at the southern end of this beach – this pool is called the Newport Rockpool and it offers a fun and safe swimming experience. 

If you like hiking, there is a hiking trail near the northern end of Newport Beach – this trail offers a fun hiking experience, along with excellent views of the Northern Sydney shoreline.  Fishing at Newport Beach is a popular activity for visitors and you can catch many kinds of fish here.  If you like shopping, there are many interesting shopping stores near Newport Beach – some of these nearby shops include flower shop Newport Beach and unique boutique shops.

If you like taking pictures with excellent Instagram-worthy views, Newport Beach offers amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and the northern Sydney shoreline.

Disability

Newport Beach offers a beach wheelchair for visitors with disabilities – this beach wheelchair is available at the Newport Surf Life Saving Club, which is located near 394 Barrenjoey Road.  If you want to use the beach wheelchair here, you can contact the authorities at this club by phone at (029) 997-5116.

Parking

Getting to Newport Beach is easy – this beach is located near 394 Barrenjoey Road.  There are multiple paid and free parking lots nearby, along with multiple free street parking spaces. 

We recommend consulting a tide chart and checking the pattern of tides for Newport Beach before visiting here because portions of this beach can get waterlogged at high tide.

Fun Fact

Newport Beach is considered to be the “home beach” of the former professional surfer Tom Carroll who became the first surfing millionaire after signing a contract with Quicksilver in 1989.  In addition, the famous photographer Max Dupain also took many photos of this beach between the 1930s and the 1950s.  In addition, this beach and the area around it host many fun events including the Beach2Beach Charity Fun Run and Festival, junior lifeguard programs, and many surfing competitions.

Attractions

There are many attractions near Newport Beach.  Barrenjoey Lighthouse is a beautiful historic sandstone lighthouse that was built in 1881 and the area around it also offers amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and the northern Sydney shoreline.  Rowland Reserve is a recreational area that has a beach with light brown sand named Rowland Reserve Beach – in addition, this recreational area also has a few other amenities including a boat ramp, restrooms, and sitting areas.  Rowland Reserve also has an off-leash dog-friendly area.  Bilgola North Headland is a headland that has a nearby beach named Bilgola Beach and this headland also has an observation area named North Bilgola Lookout.  This lookout offers amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and the northeastern Sydney shoreline.  If you like shopping, Pittwater Place Shopping Centre is a shopping center that offers some amazing shopping stores.  If you are looking for another attraction near the beach, Governor Phillip Park is a waterfront recreational park that offers many amenities including barbecues, picnic areas, grassy recreational areas, restrooms, a playground, and a boat ramp.  This park also has a water play area during summers and you can see beautiful flowering Jacaranda trees here in November.

Restaurants

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants near Newport Beach.  Newport Beach Cafe offers many amazing dishes including savory pies, burgers, eggs, sausage rolls, acai bowls, and yogurt.  The Newport is a restaurant that has beautiful gardens and it also offers delicious pizzas, burgers, fish-and-chips, and chicken, along with many refreshing alcoholic drinks – this restaurant also offers live music performances.  Bert’s Bar & Brasserie is an upscale restaurant that offers amazing gourmet Coastal European-inspired dishes including seafood, steaks, pork cutlet, pastas, and duck.  Another great restaurant is Ocean Master Fish and Chips Newport Beach that serves amazing fish-and-chips, along with a variety of other seafood dishes, burgers, and salad.  Lucky & Pep’s is known for serving excellent pizzas and it also serves a variety of other Italian dishes including chicken parmigiana, veal marsala, seafood risotto, pastas, pizzas, and salads.  If you are looking for another good and affordable nearby restaurant, ChaRice Noodle Bar offers amazing Thai dishes with local culinary influences including soups, Thai curries, pad see ew, and barbecued pork.

If you are looking for a hotel near Newport Beach, there are many great nearby options.  Barrenjoey House Palm Beach is a historic hotel that was built in 1923 and has many amenities including a restaurant, a lounge, and a terrace.  Jonah’s Boutique Hotel and Restaurant is another upscale hotel that offers many amenities including a restaurant, a swimming pool, gardens, a bar, and spa services.  The 4-Star Narrabeen Sands Hotel by Nightcap Plus offers many amenities including a restaurant, bike rental facilities, an ATM, and a bar.  A more affordable hotel is the 3-Star Palm Beach Bed & Breakfast that has a car-centred theme and offers many amenities including gardens and complimentary breakfast.  If you are looking for another good and affordable nearby hotel, the 3-Star Time and Tide Hotel offers many amenities including a liquor store, multiple bars, a bistro, and a playground.
