Located on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, near the town of Hokitika, Hokitika Beach is a nine-mile-long and wide black sand pebbly beach.  The black sand of the beach is due to the presence of high iron content that comes from the volcanic activities in the region.  This beach stretches from the mouth of the Hokitika River in the south and extends northward along the West Coast and continues past the town of Hokitika, reaching areas including Kaniere and Arahura, where the Arahura River meets the sea.  Hokitika Beach has a beautiful backdrop of dunes, coastal vegetation, and several oceanfront buildings, creating a picturesque setting along the Tasman Sea.

Hokitika was a major gold mining town in the 1860s, and remnants of its past can still be seen near the beach.  The beach has seen multiple shipwrecks in the past due to rough seas and strong currents.

Hokitika is famous for its greenstone (pounamu), which can occasionally be found on the beach, and there are many local stores near the beach that sell handcrafted greenstone jewelry and sculptures.

There are many attractions near Hokitika Beach.  Hokitika Gorge is renowned for its vivid turquoise waters, which come from glacial meltwater mixed with finely ground rock particles.  The gorge is accessible via a well-maintained trail that leads through native bush, across a suspension bridge, and to several viewing platforms that provide panoramic views of the gorge and river below.  Glow Worm Dell is a small cave that has no entry fee, which offers a magical experience where visitors can see thousands of tiny glowworms lighting up the darkness like a starry night, creating a magical and unique natural experience.  Hokitika Museum has a gallery displaying interesting exhibits, collections of fine art and historical objects, and thousands of archives and photographs on the local history of Hokitika town, including its gold mining heritage, the significance of jade to the Maori people, and early settler history.  In addition, it also has a clocktower, popularly known as the Hokitika Clock Tower, which was built as a war memorial in 1903.
Lake Kaniere is a beautiful glacial lake surrounded by lush native rainforest and mountains and is considered one of the most beautiful lakes on the West Coast.  Visitors can enjoy many fun activities, including swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, boating, hiking, and camping, making it a perfect getaway for nature lovers.  If you are looking for another nearby attraction, The West Coast Treetop Walk is a thrilling eco-adventure offering stunning views from a 20-meter-high and 450-meter-long steel walkway, a spiral viewing tower, and an exciting zipline ride through lush native rainforest over mature rimu trees.
