Located on the Coromandel Peninsula in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island, Cooks Beach is a three-kilometer-long white sand beach.  The beach is positioned on the shores of the famous Mercury Bay, and it has a spectacular backdrop of dunes, lush vegetation, forests, and several oceanfront buildings, creating a picturesque setting along the Pacific Ocean.  This beach extends from where the Purangi River flows into the sea at the western end of the beach to the iconic Shakespeare Cliff to the east.  Cooks Beach is part of a protected area that is owned by the Maori community and is promoted as an ecotourism destination, encouraging sustainable tourism practices that preserve its natural environment and marine life.

If you get hungry, there are many great restaurants near Cooks Beach. Kaizen at Go Vino serves amazing seafood, meat, and poultry dishes.  The Vessel serves delicious salads, burgers, tacos, sandwiches, meat, seafood, and poultry dishes.  Stoked Bar & Grill serves delicious pizzas, seafood, meat, and poultry dishes.  Salt Old Profile serves incredible pizzas, pasta, and Italian dishes.  If you are looking for another good and affordable restaurant nearby, Smitty’s Sports Bar And Grill serves amazing burgers, sandwiches, steaks, seafood, meat, and poultry dishes.

If you are looking for a hotel in Cooks Beach, there are many great options nearby.  If you are looking for an upscale hotel, the 4-Star The 970 Lonely Bay Lodge, is two minutes away by car and offers many amenities, including an outdoor seating area, comfortable rooms, hot tubs, and a dining room.  A more affordable Frankston Beach accommodation is the 4-Star Oceans Resort Whitianga, which offers a few amenities, including a heated outdoor pool, a sundeck, a tennis court, and a kids' playground.  Another moderately priced option is the 4-Star Marina Park Apartments, which has several amenities, including an outdoor pool, a hot tub, a fitness center, and a restaurant.  A more reasonably priced option is the 3-Star Baileys at the Beach Motel, which offers many amenities, including comfortable rooms, a barbecue grill facility, picnic tables, and an outdoor seating area.  If you are looking for another affordable hotel, Mussel Bed Cottage and Boutique Bed & Breakfast accommodation, Cooks Beach, is located close to the beach and offers a few amenities, including a kitchen and barbecue grill facility.

Cooks Beach, New Zealand, does not have lifeguards but has many other amenities, restrooms, shaded areas, a large playground, nearby hiking trails, restaurants, hotels, holiday homes, campgrounds, and a ferry terminal.

Cooks Beach offers many fun activities, including swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing, snorkeling, driving, hiking, kayaking, fishing, picnicking, and photography.  If you plan to go into the water, this naturally sheltered bay has a safe area to swim.  The water near the beach is calm and shallow, which is ideal for canoes, kayaks, and small boats.   Snorkelers and divers may spot the diverse marine life that thrives in its clear waters.  Hikers can enjoy the nearby Shakespeare Cliff track, which offers unique insights into the local biodiversity.   If you want to enjoy camping, you may book a nearby campsite that offers an amazing camping experience near the beach.  Cooks Beach is a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational opportunities, making it a perfect destination on the Coromandel Peninsula.  Dogs are allowed if they are on a leash, and the beach is open from sunrise until sunset.

Getting to Cooks Beach is easy - the beach has several parking spots at Waikato 3591, New Zealand, which provide easy access to the beach. 

This beach is named after Captain James Cook, who set foot in New Zealand near the Purangi Estuary in 1769. Cook and his crew set up his instruments at the eastern end of the beach, where they observed the transit of Mercury on November 9, 1769, giving the bay its name.

There are many attractions near Cooks Beach.  Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve is known for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, diverse marine life, and breathtaking limestone rock formations, including the iconic Cathedral Cove arch.  Visitors can enjoy many fun activities, including snorkeling, diving, and kayaking, where they can explore vibrant coral reefs and fish species in a serene, untouched environment.  Whitianga is a charming coastal town known for its vibrant atmosphere, a geothermal spa, museums, sandy beaches, cafes, restaurants, traditional architecture, and stunning natural surroundings. Visitors can enjoy many recreational activities, including fishing, boating, and marine tours.  Shakespeare Cliff Lookout is a beautiful vantage point near Cooks Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula that offers panoramic views, particularly stunning at sunrise or sunset.  There is a well-maintained track leading to the lookout, making it an easy and accessible activity for most visitors. 

Mercury Bay Museum is dedicated to preserving the rich history of Mercury Bay and the surrounding region. It has a gallery that showcases a variety of artifacts, photographs, and documents that offer a glimpse into the lives of the region's indigenous Maori people and the maritime history of the region.  In addition, you can learn about Captain James Cook’s 1769 voyage to Mercury Bay, where he observed the Transit of Mercury and interacted with the local Maori.  If you are looking for another nearby attraction, Fun Zone Adventure & Family Park, formerly known as Combat Zone, is a family-friendly amusement park that offers a wide range of thrilling activities and experiences for visitors of all ages, including outdoor laser tag, paintball, archery, soccer golf, argo rides, quad bike rides, and shooting.
