There are many attractions near Ohope Beach.  Moutohora Island—also known as Whale Island—is a pristine, uninhabited island located just off the coast of Whakatāne, near Ohope Beach.  This small, volcanic island is a haven for endangered and rare native bird species such as kiwi, saddlebacks, kakariki, and tuatara.  In addition, this island has hot water springs where visitors can dip in hot pools.  Ohiwa Harbour is a tidal estuary that features diverse ecosystems, including mangroves, salt marshes, and sand spits renowned for its tranquil waters, lush surroundings, and abundant wildlife.  Visitors can enjoy many fun activities, including kayaking, paddleboarding, boating, fishing, biking, and watching wildlife.  The Wairere Falls near Whakatane is a small, beautiful waterfall that cascades down rugged rock formations surrounded by lush native bush, creating a serene and picturesque spot.  This waterfall was historically significant and a sacred landmark to all of Mataatua, as it was also a vital source of freshwater for the Ngati Awa people living in the Whakatane region.  

Ohope Scenic Reserve is spread over 40 hectares, which is also home to unique flora, including pohutukawa forest and North Island brown kiwi that holds cultural significance for the local Maori tribe.  This reserve features walking trails that meander through native vegetation, which provides stunning views of Ohiwa Harbour and the vast Pacific Ocean, making it a perfect spot for hiking, watching birds, and capturing Instagram-worthy photos.  If you are looking for another nearby attraction, Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tane Conservation Park is a home to ancient rainforest renowned for its towering podocarp trees, including rimu and kahikatea, and rare native birds, including kokako and whio (blue duck).  Visitors can explore a network of trails, including Whirinaki Forest Walk and Moerangi Track, making it a perfect spot for hikers, birdwatchers, and nature lovers.
