Located 17 kilometers southeast of capital city of Argostoli, Lourdas Beach is a quaint white-sand quaint coastal beach that overlooks the clear blue Ionian Sea and which has been awarded Blue Flag status due to its cleanliness. Also known as Lourdata Beach, it is one of the largest bays in Kefalonia (also known as Cephalonia) and stretches for two kilometers. Some of the beach areas are sandy and some have pebbles on them. It is known for its convenient location, incredibly clean waters, and a heavenlike setting with the beautiful and captivating Mount Aenos (which has amazing waterfalls) in the background. There are many amenities here including showers, umbrellas, beach bars, mini markets – and two rows of perfectly aligned blue and white umbrellas. Parking is available right before the entry to the beach, and there is good and convenient bus service from Argostoli and other nearby villages.
There are many activities at Lourdas Beach including swimming, snorkeling, sea kayaking, and boating. Beach parties are organized during the summer months, and you can rent boats, jet-skis, and other water sports gear from Escape Club Rental Boats which is located on the beach. You’ll also find some great attractions near Lourdas Beach. Monastery of Sissia is two miles away - it was founded in the 13th century by Saint Francis of Assisi and is one of the oldest monasteries in Kefalonia. The monastery was destroyed by the 1953 earthquake, but there are still some ruins and new buildings that can be explored. Another place to checkout is the stunning Mount Ainos National Park – it’s 1,628 meters high and is known to have various legends associated with the mountain about dragons.
If you get hungry, then there are many restaurants directly across from Lourdas Beach on Skala Road. Lovidis Tavern offers authentic Greek food with an outdoor beachfront view and provides its own sunbeds. Another great option is Klimatis Tavern, which offers Greek meat dishes and is known for its Kefalonian meat pie, moussaka, and pastitsio. Café Platanos is a café that offers a great selection of tea, coffee, beer, and wine – its outdoor terrace setting overlooks some beautiful and plush gardens and is a perfect spot to relax.
