Located on the northern coast of Rugen Island in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Glowe Beach is a 1300-meter-long and 25-meter-wide beige sand beach considered the longest beach on the island. The beach is positioned in the village of Glowe Rugen and has a beautiful background of dunes, coastal vegetation, and many oceanfront buildings, including several restaurants, providing a picturesque backdrop along the Jasmund Peninsula on the Baltic Sea.
The beach is divided into 13 main sections. Beach Access 1–4, adjacent to the Yachthafen Glowe marina, is ideal for families as the water is usually calm. Beach Access 10–12 is considered an unofficial nude beach with a clothing-optional area, and entrances 12–13 are designated dog-friendly areas.
In addition, Glowe Beach is home to the remnants of a merchant ship that was traveling on the Baltic Sea between the Baltic States. The wreck was previously hidden in sand until archaeologists found it in the late 1990s. During the storms in January 2019, the beach in front of Glowe lost up to one meter of its height, revealing the well-preserved wreckage. Since then, the wreck has sustained some damage, and sawdust has been discovered on these ancient boards.
