Overview
Located in the city of Hermosa Beach in the South Bay region of Los Angeles, Hermosa Beach – also known as Hermosa City Beach – is a popular two-mile-long beach that has light brown sand and a pier named Hermosa Beach Pier. This beach is spread over 94 acres and it has been listed by the Travel Channel as one of the “Top 10 Beaches in the United States.” It has also been listed as one of the best beaches in Los Angeles County by many online and print publications including Thrillist and LA Weekly.
Hermosa Beach is usually open between 6 am and midnight.

Hermosa Beach has many amenities including lifeguards, restrooms (that are located near the Hermosa Beach Pier and a few nearby streets), showers, concession stands, biking paths, nearby rental facilities for watersports equipment and bikes, and a nearby kids’ play area.

Hermosa Beach offers many fun activities including sunbathing, beachcombing, fishing, volleyball, biking, swimming, surfing, bodysurfing, bodyboarding, paddleboarding, jet-skiing, skimboarding, scuba diving, snorkeling, boating, parasailing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, canoeing, surf-skiing, and wildlife watching.
Hermosa Beach is popular with all kinds of surfers because the water here offers fun and manageable surfing waves. The best time to surf here is during summer – in addition, the water here also offers fun surfing waves during winter and autumn. If you are planning to surf, scuba dive, bodyboard, kayak, or swim here, please be careful because the water here can have unpredictable rip currents. In addition, visitors should also note that swimming and surfing are prohibited within 100 yards of Hermosa Beach Pier – and swimmers are also prohibited from swimming through the pier’s pilings.
This beach is popular with volleyball players and it hosts a variety of fun volleyball tournaments – one of the most popular volleyball tournaments that is hosted here is the Hermosa Beach Open.
Disability Access
Hermosa Beach offers multiple beach access mats – also known as Mobi-Mats – for visitors with wheelchairs. These access mats are located at the western ends of 2nd Street, 22nd Street, and 11th Street.
In addition, there is also a beach wheelchair here that can be used for free – this beach wheelchair is available at the Hermosa Beach Los Angeles County Lifeguard Headquarters, which is located at 1201 The Strand. Parking
Getting to Hermosa Beach is easy – this beach is located near the intersection between Hermosa Avenue and 33rd Street.
There is a paid parking lot nearby – this lot is located to the north of the intersection between Pier Avenue and Hermosa Avenue. In case this lot fills up, there are also additional multiple paid parking lots near Hermosa Beach – these lots are located near the intersection of 13th Street and Hermosa Avenue. In addition to these paid lots, there are also paid street parking spaces along Hermosa Avenue and some nearby streets.
We recommend visiting Hermosa Beach early during the summers because the beach can get occasionally crowded during this time.
Fun Fact
The beach’s name – Hermosa – means “beautiful” in Spanish. This beach and its nearby areas also host many fun activities including Irish cultural performances on St. Patrick’s Day, a festival named Fiesta Hermosa, the Sand Snowman Contest, tennis tournaments, live music concerts, and a triathlon named Hermosa Beach Triathlon. In addition, Hermosa Beach earlier used to have many sand dunes. This beach has also been featured in many films including the John Cusack movie 1408 and the iconic 2016 movie La La Land.

Hermosa Beach Pier (also known as Hermosa Pier) is a 1,140-feet-long pier that offers amazing views of the southern California shoreline and the Pacific Ocean, particularly during sunset. This pier is also a popular fishing site and the area near this pier also has the Surfers Walk of Fame and the Hermosa Beach Pier Plaza. South Park Hermosa Beach is a recreational park that has many amenities including picnic tables, grassy recreational areas, a playground, and restrooms – the park also has a community garden. Saint Rocke Hermosa Beach is a live music venue that offers a variety of exciting and fun live music performances. The Comedy & Magic Club hosts memorable performances by many excellent comedians and magicians including Jay Leno, Daniel Tosh, and Danny Cole – this club also has a museum that exhibits memorabilia associated with legendary humorists.
